The Average Pay in Professional Sports: What the Numbers Really Show

Professional athlete pay depends on the league, season, players counted and compensation measure. Here are the available U.S. and league-specific figures—and their limits.

There is no single reliable average pay figure for all professional sports: the answer changes with the league, season, players counted and definition of pay. For a broad U.S. benchmark, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported a median annual wage of $66,710 for athletes and sports competitors in May 2025. That is an occupational statistic, not the average salary of players in major professional leagues. Major League Baseball offers a league-specific example: its 2025 opening-day average was $5.34 million, while its median was $1.4 million.

Why there is no single average for professional athletes

Professional sports includes leagues with different roster rules, pay structures and reporting methods. A meaningful salary figure needs to identify at least four things: the league and season, the player population counted, whether the statistic is a mean or median, and what compensation is included.

  • Population: A study might count opening-day players, all players under contract, or a wider occupational group. Those groups are not interchangeable.
  • Time period: A season-opening snapshot can differ from a final-season calculation as rosters change.
  • Statistic: The mean is the total divided by the number of players; the median is the middle salary when players are ranked by pay.
  • Pay definition: Sources may count base salary, guaranteed compensation, bonuses or average contract value in different ways.

Because those measures do not line up across leagues, the figures below are useful reference points, not a ranking of which sport pays the most.

What the available figures say

Scope and period Reported figure What it measures
U.S. athletes and sports competitors, May 2025 $66,710 median annual wage A broad occupational category, not a major-league player average. Bureau of Labor Statistics
MLB, 2025 opening day $5.34 million average; $1.4 million median The Associated Press’s opening-day study of MLB salaries. Associated Press
MLB, final 2025 figures reported in 2026 $4.61 million average attributed to MLB; $4.72 million average attributed to MLBPA Two reporting-source calculations of the final-season average; they are not the opening-day measure above. Associated Press
NHL team payroll range, 2024–25 $65.0 million lower limit; $76.5 million midpoint; $88.0 million upper limit Team payroll parameters announced by the NHL and NHLPA, not an individual player salary or league-wide average. NHL
WNBA terms announced in March 2026 $7.0 million salary cap; average salaries expected to exceed $583,000 Terms of a tentative agreement pending ratification at announcement; the average was an expectation, not a realized season-end calculation. WNBA and WNBPA

Why MLB’s average is higher than its median

A mean can rise substantially when a small group of players earns exceptionally high salaries. The median instead identifies the pay of the player in the middle of the distribution, so it is less affected by the top earners. In the AP account of 2025, 55% of MLB players earned at least $1 million, yet the opening-day mean was much higher than the median. Neither statistic is inherently the right one: the mean describes the league-wide total spread across players, while the median better represents the midpoint salary.

The AP’s MLB figures include salary, prorated signing bonuses and other guaranteed income, with payroll adjustments for cash in trades, signing bonuses, option buyouts and termination pay. The report notes that the average changes over a season as veterans are released and replaced by younger, lower-paid players. That helps explain why opening-day and final-season calculations differ; the separate final averages also reflect different reporting sources.

What other league figures can—and cannot—tell you

MLS salary-guide compensation

The MLS Players Association salary guide distinguishes annualized base salary from annualized average guaranteed compensation. The latter annualizes base pay and specified guaranteed bonuses over a contract term, includes marketing bonus and agent fees, and excludes performance bonuses that are not guaranteed. Its 2026 guide covers players under contract as of April 16, 2026. These definitions matter when looking up an individual player, but they do not make the guide’s compensation measure directly comparable to every other league’s salary average. NFL contract rankings

NFL.com’s 2025 All-Paid Team compares selected top contracts by average per year (APY), with contract details attributed to Spotrac. APY for a set of highly paid players is not the mean or median pay of all NFL players, so it cannot answer the league-wide average question. NFL.com

NBA compensation

The NBPA’s current collective bargaining agreement page identifies an agreement ratified in 2023, effective July 1, 2023, and running through the 2029–30 season with an opt-out provision. That is labor-agreement context, not a league-wide average or median salary figure. National Basketball Players Association

How to compare athlete pay without drawing the wrong conclusion

  • Compare the same season and similar roster populations where possible.
  • Keep mean and median separate; do not call one an average if the source reports the other.
  • Check whether the number is base salary, guaranteed compensation, total salary or contract APY.
  • Keep team payroll limits distinct from individual earnings.
  • Identify the league and gender category rather than combining men’s and women’s leagues without a consistent method.

The available figures do not establish a current, like-for-like average or median across the NBA, NFL, NHL, MLB, MLS and women’s leagues. Ranking sports from unlike measures would make the result look more precise than the underlying data supports.
