The Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie (FHH) supports the watch industry by preserving watchmaking knowledge, educating professionals and enthusiasts, and creating forums for industry discussion. Those activities can strengthen the audience, skills and connections the sector relies on—but available evidence does not show that FHH alone is indispensable or quantify its direct effect on sales, jobs or production.
What the FHH is—and what it is meant to do
Founded in 2005 by Audemars Piguet, Girard-Perregaux and the Richemont Group, the FHH describes itself as a neutral point of reference for watchmaking subjects. Its stated mission is to spread watchmaking culture internationally and present the watch as an object of art and culture. The foundation’s 20th-anniversary account connects that purpose to an original goal of conserving and transmitting watchmaking culture.
That remit matters to an industry whose products depend on specialist knowledge, skilled work and an audience able to understand craft and heritage. FHH’s role is to support those foundations, rather than to represent every watch company or directly manage industry output.
How the FHH can contribute to growth
Making watchmaking more visible and understandable
Watches and Culture by FHH, created in 2021, brings watchmaking to professionals and general audiences through original content, events, international meetings and exhibitions. Wider understanding may help people recognize the craft and history behind watches, supporting interest in the category. The available sources do not measure whether, or by how much, this programming changes consumer demand.

Sharing knowledge and developing skills
The FHH Academy trains and certifies watchmaking knowledge for professionals and enthusiasts. In its 2025 anniversary-year article, FHH reported that the Academy had trained more than 40,000 people and issued more than 15,000 certificates since it began in 2014. These are cumulative figures reported by the foundation; they indicate educational reach, not independently measured employment, productivity or industry growth.
Connecting people through discussion
The FHH Forum provides a platform for discussion, information and debate. By bringing industry participants together, it can help circulate ideas and contribute to conversations about the sector’s future. FHH describes this convening role, but the cited material does not specify or measure downstream policy, commercial or production effects.

A recent example: FHH Academy and GIA
On September 17, 2026, the FHH and the Gemological Institute of America announced an academic collaboration through FHH Academy. The organizations said they intend to combine their expertise and networks to create learning opportunities and broaden access to horological knowledge worldwide. The announcement establishes a planned collaboration and its stated aims, not completed results.
How the FHH differs from the Swiss watch industry federation
The FHH’s stated mandate is cultural, educational and convening. The Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry (FH), by contrast, describes itself as an association that represents member firms, protects and develops the Swiss watch industry, coordinates members’ interests and provides legal, economic and commercial services.

FH says it represents around 500 members, or more than 90% of Swiss firms active in the production and sale of watches, clocks and components. That figure is FH’s own description of its membership and its stated scope; it is not a measure of FHH’s reach. The distinction is useful: FHH works to transmit knowledge and foster dialogue, while FH’s role includes representing firms and serving their interests.

The FHH has a plausible supporting role in industry growth: cultural programming can build awareness, training can transmit knowledge, and forums can connect participants. Its reported Academy totals show substantial cumulative educational activity. But the sources cited here do not establish that these activities caused measurable increases in sales, production, employment or productivity, nor that the FHH is uniquely necessary to the industry’s growth.

The most accurate description is that the foundation strengthens cultural, educational and networking conditions that can benefit watchmaking. That is meaningful support, but it is different from proven, quantified economic impact.
