8 Major LeBron James Philanthropic Ventures—and What Their Costs Show

LeBron James’s Akron-area philanthropy includes a public school, scholarships, housing, community programming, and more. Published figures measure different kinds of costs, so they cannot support a reliable ranking or total of his personal donations.

There is no reliable public basis for ranking eight LeBron James philanthropic ventures from most to least expensive. The available figures measure different things: a school construction project, annual program expenses, a one-time gift of tablets, and a historical scholarship projection. They do not establish how much James personally paid. The eight Akron-area initiatives below show what each does and what its published cost evidence can—and cannot—tell you.

How to interpret the cost figures

The LeBron James Family Foundation (LJFF) focuses on children and families in James’s hometown of Akron, Ohio, through education and related support. Its current homepage, accessed in 2026, says its programs serve more than 1,400 Akron-area students. That is a changing participation figure, not a measure of total spending.

The table distinguishes construction cost, annual program expense, an in-kind gift, and a historical projection. Those measures are not interchangeable: a one-year expense is not a project’s lifetime cost, and a projected number of scholarships is not a final bill. Form 990-derived program expenses are accounting categories, not necessarily standalone ventures or amounts funded solely by James.

Venture Published cost evidence What the figure measures
I PROMISE School $13.5 million, later reported as $16.2 million (Akron Public Schools, approximately 2025); FY2024 program expense: $3.1 million (Philanthropy.org, Form 990-derived reporting). FY2023 program expense: $3.5 million (Philanthropy.org). The first figures are construction-project costs after delays; the latter figures are annual program expenses for different fiscal years.
I PROMISE scholarships and college access Up to 2,300 scholarships (TIME, 2015). An early estimate of potential scale, not a final award count, aggregate dollar commitment, or amount paid.
I PROMISE Village and housing supports All-in project cost: not stated (LJFF official timeline). The available official description identifies the housing purpose but does not provide a complete project price.
House Three Thirty FY2024 program expense: $2.5 million (Philanthropy.org, Form 990-derived reporting). One fiscal year’s program expense, not the facility’s renovation or total capital cost.
School-year and family programming LJFF Hospitality program expense: $3.4 million in FY2024 (Philanthropy.org, Form 990-derived reporting). An annual accounting category; it should not be added to other categories as if it were necessarily a separate venture.
Tablets for Akron third graders $280,000 (TIME, 2020 report about the 2013 gift). The reported value of a one-time in-kind gift of Samsung tablets.
Bikes and the bike initiative Total initiative cost: not stated (LJFF official program information). The Foundation describes the program but does not publish a total cost.
LeBron James Invitational Venture cost: not stated (Associated Press announcement). The announcement provides event dates and a youth mentorship component, but no cost.

What are LeBron James’s biggest philanthropic projects?

I PROMISE School

I PROMISE School is a public school developed through a partnership between LJFF and Akron Public Schools. Its model brings the Foundation’s education and family supports into a school setting. Akron Public Schools reported that the construction-project cost rose after delays; that project figure does not establish the Foundation’s share, James’s personal contribution, or the school’s annual operating cost.

I PROMISE scholarships and college access

The Foundation says eligible I PROMISE students are guaranteed four-year scholarships through a partnership with the University of Akron. The early estimate in the table is a historical projection, not evidence that every projected scholarship was awarded or that a final total has been spent. The reviewed current official material does not publish an aggregate cost for the pathway.

I PROMISE Village and housing supports

LJFF describes I PROMISE Village as transitional housing for students and families who need safe, stable accommodation during difficult circumstances. The Foundation also describes longer-term housing as part of its broader support model. Neither description supplies a verified all-in price for the Village or a total cost for longer-term housing.

House Three Thirty

House Three Thirty is a multi-use facility for I PROMISE families and the wider community, offering resources and programming. The Foundation’s announcement describes partner-supported features, including a sports complex. Its annual program-expense figure should not be mistaken for the facility’s renovation cost or the total value of partner contributions.

School-year and family programming

LJFF’s broader model includes school-year services and family supports. The separate “LJFF Hospitality” label in Form 990-derived reporting is an accounting category; it does not by itself show that the amount represents a distinct project or that it can be added to other program expenses without overlap. The Foundation’s published participant count gives context for the scale of its work, but not a spending-per-student calculation.

Tablets for Akron third graders

TIME reported that the Foundation gave Samsung tablets to Akron third graders in 2013. The reported value is a dated, in-kind gift valuation: it is not a recurring annual budget or evidence of a cash donation of the same amount.

Bikes and the bike initiative

The Foundation says students entering I PROMISE receive a bicycle and helmet, and volunteers help assemble and repair bikes. The program has a clear practical purpose, but no reliable total cost for the ongoing initiative is published in the sources reviewed.

LeBron James Invitational

The Associated Press reported that LJFF and the PGA Tour announced a two-day Invitational at Firestone Country Club for July 6–7, 2027, with a youth mentorship component. It is a recently announced initiative, not a basis for an expense ranking: the announcement gives no venture-cost figure.

How much money has LeBron James donated to Akron?

These figures do not add up to a defensible total of James’s personal donations. Some describe a public-school construction project undertaken in partnership with Akron Public Schools; others are annual Foundation program expenses, a gift valuation, or an early estimate of possible scholarships. The available evidence also does not establish the Foundation’s exact share of every project or complete capital costs for House Three Thirty and I PROMISE Village. A credible personal-donation total would require comparable, attributable figures that these sources do not provide.
