For nurses comparing the brands, the useful starting point is the job: choose for fit, foot shape, cushioning preference, stability, floor conditions, and dress code—not cushioning alone. HOKA’s healthcare guidance also emphasizes support, durability, and slip resistance.
What matters most in a nursing shoe?
Long shifts on hard floors make comfort important, but a plush midsole is not a substitute for a shoe that fits securely or meets unit requirements. HOKA’s November 20, 2025 healthcare article says nurses may walk 6 to 8 km in a 12-hour shift, attributing that estimate to NurseJournal. That is an attributed estimate, not a verified measurement for every nurse or shift.
- Fit and foot shape: Try shoes later in the day, when feet may be more swollen, and check that the heel is secure and toes have room. HOKA’s guide stresses that a nursing shoe needs to fit properly; sizing and comfort are individual.
- Cushioning: More cushioning may appeal to someone seeking a softer feel, but it does not establish that a shoe will feel comfortable for every wearer.
- Support: If you prefer stability-oriented footwear, compare stability models with neutral models rather than assuming the most cushioned shoe is the best match.
- Grip and upper: Check your employer’s requirements for slip resistance and cleanability. A mesh road-running shoe and a work-focused, water-resistant shoe are not interchangeable.
- Current model and price: Confirm the exact generation, width availability, and current price on the seller’s listing. The sources reviewed do not establish a current price floor.
HOKA options for nurses
| Model | What the evidence says | Consider it if… | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bondi 9 | HOKA describes it as ultra-cushioned. ASRN’s nurse-focused roundup names it best overall and recounts one ICU nurse’s positive experience on long shifts. | You want a highly cushioned road sneaker. | It has a mesh upper; do not confuse it with Bondi SR. Individual nurse reports are not controlled comparisons. |
| Clifton 10 | HOKA presents it as cushioned with a lighter feel and says it has APMA recognition. Prevention includes a podiatrist’s recommendation for neutral foot types. | You want cushioning in a lighter-feeling option. | Confirm that its grip, upper, and fit meet your unit’s requirements. |
| Bondi SR | Prevention describes this work-focused variant as having a slip-resistant outsole and water-resistant leather. | Workplace grip and a more wipeable or resistant upper matter to you. | Check current specifications and your employer’s exact slip-resistance and cleaning rules. |
| Arahi 8 and Gaviota 5 | HOKA’s healthcare guide characterizes these models as stability choices. | You are looking for stability-oriented support rather than a neutral shoe. | Fit and support preferences vary. Prevention’s discussion of Arahi 7 concerns an older generation and should not be treated as Arahi 8 specifications. |
Prevention quotes podiatrist Anne Sharkey discussing the Bondi model as a cushioned neutral shoe suited to long hours on hard surfaces, particularly for someone with higher arches seeking shock absorption. Its Clifton commentary, from podiatrist Priya Parthasarathy, describes that model as balanced, cushioned, and supportive for a neutral foot type. These are expert opinions, not guarantees of an individual result.
Which Brooks shoes are worth comparing?
Brooks Ghost 16 and Ghost 17
PRN Healthcare recommends the Ghost family as an everyday-support option, but its guide names multiple generations. Ghost 16 and Ghost 17 are successive versions of the standard Ghost line; verify which generation is currently offered and compare the listing’s exact model before buying. The available recommendations do not provide a consistent head-to-head test against HOKA models.

Brooks Ghost Max 2
Ghost Max 2 is a separate line from the standard Ghost. ASRN’s roundup calls it a comfort pick based on nurse reports, while also warning of limited traction. That makes outsole performance especially important to verify for a clinical floor; the anecdotal comfort reports do not establish universal fit or suitability for every workplace.
Are HOKA shoes good for nurses?
They can be a reasonable shortlist for nurses who find the fit and support suitable, but the brand alone does not answer whether a particular shoe is right for a shift. HOKA’s own guidance distinguishes lighter-feeling cushioning, ultra-cushioning, and stability models, while its Bondi SR is a work-oriented variant. Match the specific model to your foot and unit conditions rather than treating all HOKA shoes as equivalent.

Do nurses need slip-resistant shoes?
Follow your employer’s footwear policy. HOKA includes slip resistance among its general recommendations for healthcare footwear, and Prevention describes Bondi SR as having a slip-resistant outsole. Do not infer that a standard road sneaker has the same work-shoe construction or that a marketing description automatically satisfies a facility’s requirements.
How to narrow the choice before buying
- Check the policy: Find your unit’s rules for outsole grip, upper material, color, and cleaning.
- Identify the fit you need: Consider foot shape and whether neutral or stability-oriented support has worked better for you.
- Choose the cushioning feel: Compare a lighter-feeling option such as Clifton 10 with the more cushioned Bondi 9, while recognizing that feel is personal.
- Confirm the exact model: Distinguish Bondi 9 from Bondi SR, standard Ghost from Ghost Max 2, and current generations from older ones.
- Verify price and return terms: Compare current seller listings and make sure you can exchange the shoe if the fit is wrong. No verified $28 starting price is established by the sources cited here.
What nurse recommendations can and cannot tell you
ASRN reports individual nurse experiences, including one nurse’s estimate of about 15,000 steps during a 12-hour shift and another’s report of about 10,000 steps on 10-hour shifts. Those accounts illustrate the demands some nurses face; they are personal reports, not population-level findings or evidence that one model prevents pain. The available sources do not establish a controlled clinical comparison of the named HOKA and Brooks shoes.
