Before booking, check the full cost of your flight, lodging, rental car and card payments—including required charges and optional add-ons you may need. The fees below vary by provider and itinerary, so confirm the terms at checkout rather than relying on a remembered price.
1. Airline baggage charges
A low fare may not include the checked bag or carry-on you plan to bring. Allowances can depend on the operating carrier, route, fare, bag dimensions and weight, loyalty status, or an eligible card benefit. Check the operating airline’s baggage page and the allowance attached to the specific fare. If weight limits matter, weighing your bag before departure can help you spot an issue; the airline’s current rules determine whether a charge applies.
U.S. disclosure rules have changed. The Department of Transportation’s June 30, 2026 update says airlines and ticket agents must notify consumers that baggage fees may apply and direct them to the applicable fee information; airlines must also keep ancillary fees in one central website location. The Fifth Circuit vacated mandates in the 2024 rule, so older summaries of that rule may not describe the current framework. Check the DOT’s current airline-fee information.
2. Advance seat-selection fees
Some airlines charge for choosing a seat in advance. Check whether the fare includes a seat assignment, when one is made, and whether selecting a particular seat costs extra. If sitting together or choosing a specific location matters, compare the fare’s seat terms before buying; do not assume every traveler has to pay to select a seat. DOT lists advance seat selection as an example of an optional ancillary service on its consumer refund and airline-fee guidance.

3. Flight changes and cancellations
Read the fare rules before booking, not just the headline fare. Find out whether changing or canceling the ticket triggers a charge, whether the ticket is refundable, and whether any value is returned as a credit instead of money. Terms vary by airline and fare. DOT directs consumers to airline fee information for change and cancellation terms as well as baggage fees. Review the DOT’s airline-fee guidance and the specific fare conditions before paying.
4. Hotel resort fees and vacation-rental cleaning charges
A nightly price can leave out a charge that is mandatory for the stay. Compare the total for the same dates and party size, and check what is due at the property as well as what is optional. An automatically charged resort fee and a required vacation-rental cleaning fee are examples of mandatory lodging charges.

In the United States, the FTC’s Unfair or Deceptive Fees rule took effect May 12, 2025. It covers short-term lodging offers, including offers displayed by third-party platforms and travel agents, and requires covered businesses to include mandatory fees in the displayed total price. Government charges and genuinely optional add-ons can be treated differently. The rule does not cover every travel provider or airline fares. See the FTC’s rule FAQ for scope and details.
5. Rental-car fuel, mileage, tolls and return terms
An advertised rental rate may not reflect the final cost. Before booking, compare the policies that can change what you owe:

- Tolls: Read the toll-program pricing. A service fee may be charged daily or once even if you do not use a toll road.
- Pickup and drop-off: Check airport surcharges, the return time, early- or late-return terms, and any fee for returning the car to a different location.
The FTC identifies these as potential sources of extra rental cost. Review the rental company’s terms for your pickup location and dates rather than assuming the same policy applies everywhere. FTC guidance on car-rental costs.
6. Rental-car add-ons and coverage
Added drivers, underage-driver charges, child seats or racks, roadside assistance, insurance, and collision- or loss-damage waivers can increase the bill. Ask what is included in the quoted price and what each paid option covers before accepting it.

Before buying coverage from the rental company—or deciding you do not need it—check your personal auto policy, credit-card benefits, employer coverage or auto-club membership, and read the rental contract. Whether an existing policy or benefit applies depends on its terms and your trip; do not assume it provides the protection you need. FTC guidance on rental-car add-ons.

These are two different costs. Your card issuer may charge a foreign-transaction fee for a purchase outside the United States, with a foreign merchant, or in foreign currency; not every card or transaction incurs one. Separately, a merchant or ATM may offer to convert the amount into your home currency at the point of sale. That dynamic currency conversion can use an exchange rate with an added fee or markup.

Check your card issuer’s terms before traveling. If offered a currency conversion, compare the displayed amounts, exchange rate and any stated markup before choosing. The issuer’s foreign-transaction fee and the merchant’s conversion terms are separate, so consider both. Consumer guidance on foreign-transaction fees and dynamic currency conversion.
Compare the trip total, not just the advertised price
Use the same itinerary, dates and party size when comparing options. Add required charges to the price, then consider only the optional services you actually want or need.
- Flights: Compare baggage allowance, seat terms, and change or cancellation conditions alongside the fare.
- Lodging: Compare the full stay total and note any amount payable at the property.
- Rental cars: Compare fuel, mileage, toll, pickup location, return time and drop-off terms, plus any add-ons or coverage you are considering.
- Payments abroad: Check card terms and any offered conversion rate or markup.
Fee schedules and checkout totals can change, and there is no single fee amount that applies to every provider or trip. Recheck the details for your actual itinerary before paying.
When a price increase is governed by UK rules
Rules vary by country. As a separate UK example, the Civil Aviation Authority’s summer 2026 advice says a provider cannot add a new jet-fuel surcharge to an already-booked flight-only booking under UK rules. Package-holiday price increases are subject to limited contractual and notice requirements; if an increase exceeds 8% of the total holiday price, the provider must offer the option of a full, fee-free refund to end the contract. This guidance distinguishes flight-only bookings from package holidays and should not be applied as a general rule outside its UK context. Read the CAA’s summer 2026 advice.
