The longest Amtrak trip depends on what counts as one journey. Amtrak identifies the California Zephyr as its longest route with daily operation, while the Texas Eagle offers a longer Chicago–Los Angeles through itinerary only three times a week, connecting with the Sunset Limited. Below, routes are ranked by approximate one-way mileage using the reported endpoint for each itinerary; the Empire Builder’s Seattle and Portland branches count separately. The mileage figures come from a secondary overview, not a current Amtrak mileage table, so treat the order and distances as estimates rather than official rankings.
Seven long Amtrak itineraries, ranked by approximate mileage
The list uses the reported approximate mileage for each endpoint itinerary. The Texas Eagle’s Los Angeles trip is a connected through-service, not a daily standalone Chicago–Los Angeles train. The Empire Builder’s two endpoints are listed separately because they are distinct branches after Spokane.
| Rank | One-way itinerary | Approximate distance | What the route means |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Chicago–Los Angeles via the Texas Eagle and Sunset Limited | About 2,728 miles | Through-service with a connection to the Sunset Limited; operates three times weekly to Los Angeles, according to Amtrak’s route information. [Amtrak Texas Eagle] |
| 2 | Chicago–Emeryville via the California Zephyr | About 2,438 miles | Amtrak describes the California Zephyr as its longest route with daily operation. [Amtrak California Zephyr] |
| 3 | Chicago–Los Angeles via the Southwest Chief | About 2,265 miles | A single route linking Chicago, Kansas City, Albuquerque, Flagstaff, and Los Angeles. [Amtrak Southwest Chief] |
| 4 | Chicago–Seattle via the Empire Builder | About 2,206 miles | The Empire Builder runs through Spokane, where it divides toward Seattle or Portland. [Amtrak Empire Builder] |
| 5 | Chicago–Portland via the Empire Builder | About 2,156 miles | The Portland branch shares the route to Spokane before turning toward Oregon. [Amtrak Empire Builder] |
| 6 | New Orleans–Los Angeles via the Sunset Limited | About 1,995 miles | A cross-country route between the Gulf Coast and Southern California. [Amtrak Sunset Limited] |
| 7 | Miami–New York via the Silver Meteor | About 1,389 miles | This itinerary is slightly longer than the Coast Starlight in the same secondary mileage overview. The source’s mileage is approximate; check current routing and schedules with Amtrak. |
The mileage estimates in the table are reported by a secondary route overview; they are not established here as current official Amtrak distances. In that same overview, the Coast Starlight is listed at about 1,377 miles, so it falls just below the Silver Meteor for a seven-entry list using these figures. Amtrak’s route page describes the Coast Starlight as running between Seattle and Los Angeles. [Amtrak Coast Starlight] The mileage figures are from Wikipedia’s Amtrak route overview; the page metadata reviewed did not establish a publication year.
Why the “longest Amtrak trip” depends on the definition
Longest daily route
For a daily operating route, the California Zephyr is the clear answer: Amtrak calls it its longest route with daily operation. It links Chicago, Denver, and Emeryville. [Amtrak California Zephyr]
#1 Best Overall
Longest through itinerary
The Chicago–Los Angeles Texas Eagle itinerary covers more reported miles, but it is not the same kind of service as a daily route. The Texas Eagle runs daily between Chicago and San Antonio; three times a week, cars connect with the Sunset Limited for onward service to Los Angeles. Confirm the operating day and connection when planning the full trip. [Amtrak Texas Eagle]
How the Empire Builder is counted
The Empire Builder divides at Spokane for Seattle and Portland. Counting each destination as an itinerary creates two entries; treating the Empire Builder as one route creates one. The two branches appear separately here because they have different endpoints and mileage estimates. [Amtrak Empire Builder]

What the longest Amtrak trips cost
There is no reliable single price for any of these trips without a travel date, passenger count, and accommodation choice. Amtrak says, “Fares, routes, and schedules are subject to change without notice.” Use the live Fare Finder for the dates you are considering rather than treating an old quote or sale fare as a typical cost. Get a comparable quote
- Open Amtrak’s Fare Finder.
- Enter the exact origin and destination, departure date, return status, and number of passengers.
- Compare the same accommodation type across routes: coach with coach, or sleeper with sleeper. A roomette or other sleeping accommodation is not included in a coach fare.
- Record the fare and the date you checked it. If comparing multiple journeys, search them close together because availability and prices can change.
Amtrak also says tickets can be purchased in its app, at a station kiosk, or from a station agent. [Amtrak tickets]

Promotions are date- and route-specific
As of October 8, 2026, Amtrak’s Falling Fares Sale advertised at least 25% off Flex coach fares on eligible routes and travel dates from October 14 through December 17, 2026. The offer is subject to restrictions and limited seats, so it should be treated as a temporary promotion—not the standard price of a long-distance ticket. [Amtrak Falling Fares Sale terms]

Coach versus a roomette
Coach and sleeping accommodations are separate fare choices. Amtrak’s Empire Builder page lists coach seats and Superliner roomettes, but the roomette is not part of the coach ticket. Check both options for your dates and compare the total fare rather than assuming a sleeper is a small upgrade. [Amtrak Empire Builder]

Dining varies by route
Amtrak lists traditional dining on the California Zephyr, Coast Starlight, Empire Builder, Southwest Chief, and Sunset Limited. On the Texas Eagle, its page distinguishes flexible dining between Chicago and San Antonio from traditional dining on the Los Angeles section. Dining arrangements and current menus can change; check the route-specific information for your departure before budgeting meals or assuming a meal is included. [Amtrak meals and dining]
