The plant is in Grünheide (Mark), Brandenburg—not in Berlin itself—and the opening event included the handover of 30 Model Y vehicles to customers.
When did Tesla open the Berlin Gigafactory?
The opening ceremony and production-start event took place on 22 March 2022 at Tesla’s factory in Grünheide. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz attended; his government’s published speech identifies the occasion as the opening of the Gigafactory in Grünheide on that date (Federal Government speech transcript).
Brandenburg’s State Chancellery says Tesla announced its investment on 12 November 2019, and 861 days passed between that announcement and the production-start event (Land Brandenburg, 22 March 2022). The ceremony marked an opening and the start of production; it did not mean the factory had instantly reached its planned capacity.
Where is the factory, and what does it make?
The site is in Grünheide (Mark), in Brandenburg southeast of Berlin. The “Berlin Gigafactory” name refers to this location in the Berlin region, not a factory within Berlin city limits. Brandenburg reported that construction began in spring 2020 on a 300-hectare site, where a battery-cell factory was also being built (Land Brandenburg).

Tesla describes Grünheide as its first European manufacturing location and says the site produces Model Y vehicles and battery cells. Tesla’s factory page characterizes its output as hundreds of thousands of Model Y vehicles and millions of battery cells, but it does not provide a dated, independently audited annual production figure (Tesla Gigafactory Berlin-Brandenburg; Tesla manufacturing overview).
What happened at the opening?
The event combined the start of vehicle production with the first customer handovers. Brandenburg says Tesla handed over 30 Model Y cars at the event, with Elon Musk making the handovers (Land Brandenburg, 22 March 2022). That figure describes the ceremony’s first deliveries, not the factory’s total production.

Brandenburg’s Minister-President Dietmar Woidke welcomed the company’s decision, saying: “Dass Sie sich für Brandenburg entschieden haben, ist gut für Tesla und gut für die Zukunftsregion Berlin-Brandenburg.” In translation: “Your decision to choose Brandenburg is good for Tesla and good for the future region of Berlin-Brandenburg” (Land Brandenburg). Scholz said at the opening: “Die Elektromobilität wird die Mobilität der Zukunft prägen, und das ist heute hier klar”—“Electromobility will shape the mobility of the future, and that is clear here today” (Federal Government speech transcript).
What was planned capacity—and what is known about actual output?
Brandenburg described the first expansion stage as having planned capacity of up to 500,000 Model Y vehicles. This was a capacity target, not a production result or proof that the plant was operating at that annual rate (Land Brandenburg).

Tesla’s current description gives a broad, company-reported indication of the site’s scale, but does not establish a dated annual total. The available figures therefore distinguish the government-reported plan from Tesla’s undated output description; neither should be presented as an independently verified current run rate.
How did construction and approval relate?
Brandenburg announced final approval for the factories producing electric cars and battery cells on 4 March 2022. Construction had already begun under 19 authorizations for early measures, at the investor’s risk. The final approval therefore came after construction was underway, not before all work began (Land Brandenburg, 4 March 2022).

What local impacts and later concerns were reported?
Brandenburg officials presented the project as a major investment with potential to support regional industry and jobs. In its opening announcement, the state also said local infrastructure—including childcare, housing and rail connections—would need further development. These were the government’s expectations and assessment at the time, rather than a guarantee that every benefit or infrastructure improvement had already materialized (Land Brandenburg, 22 March 2022).
In 2024, the Associated Press reported opposition to expansion proposals involving a freight depot, warehouses and a kindergarten. Environmental activists and local groups raised concerns about forest clearing and water supply. The proposals were reported as potentially involving more than 100 hectares; that is a description of proposed plans, not evidence that the land was cleared or that a final planning decision had been made (Associated Press, 2024).
