Tesla now says Model S is no longer in production and directs shoppers to pre-owned inventory, where asking prices need to be checked live.
Where the $130,000 price tag came from
The headline figure was tied to the Model S Plaid’s June 2021 launch coverage. The Washington Post reported that the car was listed on Tesla’s website at about $130,000 before potential savings. Engadget reported a $130,000 starting price following a $10,000 increase. The accounts describe the price slightly differently, but both place it in the 2021 launch period.
That figure should not be used as a present-day quote. In April 2023, Electrek reported a later price of $104,990. That, too, is a historical price—not a current asking price.
How much horsepower does the Model S Plaid have?
Tesla’s US Model S page lists the Plaid at 1,020 hp peak power and describes it as a tri-motor vehicle. The Washington Post’s 2021 launch story described the car as having more than 1,000 horsepower, while Engadget reported 1,020 hp. The current Tesla figure is a manufacturer specification, not an independent measurement.

Tesla’s US product page, accessed October 8, 2026, lists the following figures. They are manufacturer specifications; range is EPA-estimated.

These numbers are not interchangeable with independent road-test results. In particular, the 200 mph figure is conditional on buying the required hardware upgrade, rather than the unqualified top speed of every Plaid.

Is the Model S Plaid still available new?
Tesla’s current US page states: “Model S is no longer in production. Pre-owned non-Signature Edition inventory vehicles may still be available.” That establishes the manufacturer’s current production status, but it does not mean there are no used Plaid cars for sale. Tesla points shoppers toward pre-owned inventory, and the page does not establish a current asking price.
For a purchase decision, check Tesla’s live inventory and confirm the exact vehicle’s model year, configuration, mileage, condition, and listed price. The launch-era $130,000 figure and the 2023 reported price cannot substitute for that listing.
