Re:

Which Tax Year Does an End-of-Year Paycheck Belong To?

For ordinary U.S. federal income-tax reporting, a paycheck’s tax year generally depends on when the wages were received or made available—not when the work was performed.

For ordinary U.S. federal income-tax reporting, a paycheck for December work that is first paid and available in January generally counts in the January payment year—not the year you did the work. What matters is when you received the wages or could access them without substantial restriction. A check or deposit made available before December 31 can count in the earlier year, even if you wait until January to cash or use it.

How to determine the tax year for a year-end paycheck

Most individual employees report wages using the cash-method timing rule: income is generally included in the year it is actually or constructively received. The IRS explains that income available to you may be taxable whether or not it is physically in your possession (IRS: What is taxable and nontaxable income?; see also IRS Publication 17).

So the end date of the work period does not, by itself, decide the tax year. The key question is when the money became accessible to you. The practical shorthand is that payday generally controls—but only if you could not get the money earlier.

What happens in common paycheck situations?

Situation General federal income-tax treatment
You work in December, and your normal payday is in January; the money is not available sooner. Generally included in the January payment year.
Your employer makes a valid paycheck available in December, but you pick it up or deposit it in January. Generally included in the December availability year.
A direct deposit is credited and usable before December 31. May be included in that year because the funds were available; check the actual posting and access date and any restriction.
A check is dated in December but is not received or accessible until January. The printed date alone does not establish when you constructively received the wages. Consider when the check or funds were actually made available.
A check is mailed too late to arrive before year-end, and you cannot otherwise access the funds until January. Generally included in the next year, consistent with the IRS example.

Why access matters more than cashing or depositing

Constructive receipt means income can count as received when it is available to you without substantial restriction, even if you choose not to take possession of it. For example, if your employer made a valid check available in December, waiting until January to collect or deposit it generally does not shift the wages into the later year.

By contrast, if the check could not possibly reach you until January and no other means of accessing the wages existed before year-end, the IRS says the income belongs in the year it becomes available. A check’s date is one fact, but it does not replace the question of actual access.

Use your W-2 and payroll records to check the year

Your Form W-2 is the annual record of wages and withholding. IRS employer instructions direct employers to report taxable wages, tips, and other compensation paid during the year (General Instructions for Forms W-2 and W-3 (2026)).

For a paycheck that crosses December and January, compare the W-2 with the pay stub and payroll calendar, the date a paper check was received or made available, and the date direct-deposit funds posted and became usable. If those facts appear inconsistent with the W-2, ask your employer’s payroll department how the wages were reported and whether a correction is appropriate. An unusual restriction, a different accounting method, deferred compensation, noncash benefits, or a specialized tax provision can require a more specific analysis.

A narrow exception for the foreign earned income exclusion

The IRS describes a special timing rule for figuring the foreign earned income exclusion. It is not a general rule for deciding the year ordinary wages appear in gross income or on a W-2.

Scope of this answer

This guidance concerns ordinary U.S. federal income-tax treatment for individual employees. State income-tax rules and specialized compensation arrangements may differ, and the facts can matter when access to pay was restricted or the employee does not use the usual cash-method treatment.
