TUI’s Fully Funded UK Pilot Training Scheme: What Happened and Is It Open?

TUI launched a UK Multi Pilot Licence (MPL) cadet scheme in December 2022, and its first 30 cadets began training in August 2023. TUI said the selected candidates faced no upfront training cost and could progress to B737 pilot roles after completing the programme. That is a historical description: TUI’s current general pilot FAQ does not confirm that a new funded cadet application round is open.

What was TUI’s fully funded pilot scheme?

TUI’s scheme was an ab-initio route: selected applicants could start pilot training without prior flying experience, rather than needing to arrive with a commercial pilot licence. TUI described it as a UK Multi Pilot Licence (MPL) programme intended to prepare cadets for B737 flying with the airline.

In its August 2023 announcement, TUI said 30 people had been selected from 6,700 applications and 2,000 interviews. The company said the selected cadets could undertake training with no upfront cost and become B737 pilots for TUI after completing the programme. Those statements describe TUI’s original programme and selected cohort; they do not establish the terms of any later intake.

How was the training structured?

In a March 2023 account, TUI described an 18-month programme and 30 places a year. The stated sequence included ground school, basic flying, advanced flying, familiarisation with the business, and operational line training on the 737. TUI Airways director Malcolm Sutherland described the final phase as training on the aircraft in airline operations.

The duration and annual places are historical programme details from TUI’s 2023 description, not a current schedule or promise of recurring recruitment. The available announcement also does not itemise incidental expenses or set out full employment contract terms.

Is TUI’s pilot training scheme open now?

The TUI general pilot FAQ provides recruitment guidance, including that UK operations require a valid UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) licence and that UK applicants complete training in the UK. It does not announce an open MPL cadet intake. A conventional First Officer vacancy is not the same as a funded, ab-initio cadet scheme.

Before relying on an old article or applying, check TUI’s pilot careers information and the live vacancies linked there for a role specifically identified as a cadet or funded training intake. The FAQ is general recruitment guidance, not confirmation that the historic scheme is recruiting again.

How do I apply, and do I need flying experience?

TUI’s original launch announcement said applicants could apply without prior qualifications or experience. That is not evidence of current eligibility: requirements can change with a new intake, and TUI has not confirmed one in its general FAQ. Do not assume that the initial scheme’s entry conditions still apply.

  1. Check TUI’s official pilot careers page for a live cadet or MPL vacancy, rather than treating a general First Officer opening as a training place.
  2. Read the specific vacancy notice for its eligibility, application dates, cost coverage, training route and any employment conditions.
  3. Apply through the route and by the deadline stated in that notice. If there is no cadet vacancy, the historic announcement does not provide a current application form or guarantee a future intake.

The first cohort included people with varied backgrounds, including former cabin crew, a chef, a doctor, engineers, medically discharged armed forces personnel, a Syrian refugee and a personal trainer. That shows career changers were represented; it does not mean any particular background guarantees eligibility or selection.

How does TUI compare with other UK funded schemes announced in 2026?

Other airlines announced separate funded programmes in 2026. Their availability, requirements and training routes should not be treated as TUI’s terms.

Programme Status and places Training route and duration Published cost information Published entry details
TUI UK MPL cadet scheme Launched in December 2022; first cohort began in August 2023. TUI’s current general FAQ does not confirm an open cadet intake. TUI described an 18-month MPL programme in March 2023, with 30 places a year at that time. TUI said the selected first-cohort cadets had no upfront training cost. Its announcement does not itemise incidental expenses. The 2023 launch said no prior qualifications or experience were needed. This is not confirmed as a current requirement.
Jet2FlightPath Jet2 said on 18 February 2026 that the programme had reopened for 2026, with at least 60 places. Fully funded 18-month ATPL course; Jet2 named Skyborne Airline Academy, Leading Edge and FTE Jerez as training partners. Jet2 described the course as fully funded. Jet2 listed at least five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including maths and a science subject, or equivalent.
British Airways Speedbird Pilot Academy BA’s 2026 application period ran from 14 to 23 April, with up to 160 places; that window has closed. Speedbird Pilot Academy; duration and licence route not stated in the cited announcement. BA said £100,000 in training costs would be covered for successful candidates. BA listed age, GCSE and travel-document conditions in its announcement.

These announcements show why it is important to compare the precise vacancy, not just the phrase “fully funded.” MPL and ATPL are distinct licence routes, and places, eligibility and cost coverage belong to each airline’s own published terms. For the dated 2026 details, see Jet2’s Jet2FlightPath announcement and BA’s Speedbird Pilot Academy information.

What is established about future funded pilot training in the UK?

In a written answer on 23 February 2026, Lord Hendy of Richmond Hill said that British Airways, Jet2.com and TUI had “periodically offered partly or fully funded training programmes.” He also said an approved training organisation could deliver a cost-free first officer apprenticeship for young people, and that government officials were working with the Department for Work and Pensions and airlines to encourage delivery. This is national context, not confirmation of a live TUI cadet vacancy.

For TUI, the reliable distinction is between the historical scheme and current recruitment: the company announced a funded-fee cadet route and trained an initial cohort, but its general FAQ does not establish a new application round. Check a specific live vacancy for current terms before making financial or career plans.
