TD Bank said an employee accessed some customers’ personal information without a legitimate business purpose between September 2023 and March 2024. Cybernews reported on August 15, 2024, that 41 clients were affected. The incident was described as improper employee access—not an external hacker intrusion—and the report does not establish that every affected customer suffered fraud.

What happened in the TD Bank data incident?

Cybernews reported that TD Bank’s customer notification described an employee accessing customer information without a legitimate business purpose over the period from September 2023 through March 2024. The report characterized the event as isolated and said the bank’s corporate security team was investigating, with law enforcement involved. Cybernews’s August 15, 2024 report is the matching account for these incident details; a primary TD notice or regulator filing independently confirming them was not located.

This was reported as misuse of internal access, rather than a conventional outside attack on the bank’s network. Improper access means information may have been viewed or obtained; it does not by itself show that the information was used to make fraudulent transactions.

What information may have been accessed?

Cybernews listed the information that may have been exposed as names, addresses, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, debit-card numbers, expiration dates, and security codes. The report does not establish that every field was exposed for every person among the reported 41 clients.

How many customers were affected, and what did TD say?

Cybernews reported that 41 clients were affected. That count comes from the secondary report and is not independently confirmed here against a matching primary incident notice. The report quoted the customer notification as saying, “We recently discovered that between September 2023 and March of 2024, one of our employees improperly accessed some of your personal information without a legitimate business purpose.”

The report also quoted TD as saying, “We have reimbursed your account if applicable and we are taking action to better protect your information in the future.” “If applicable” does not mean every affected customer had a loss or received reimbursement; the report does not say that all 41 experienced unauthorized transactions.

What should you do if TD says your information was exposed?

  1. Verify the notice independently. Do not use links or phone numbers in an unexpected email or text. Find TD’s contact information on its official website or the back of your card, then ask whether the notice applies to you.
  2. Review your account activity. Check recent transactions and statements for charges or withdrawals you do not recognize. Contact TD through a trusted channel promptly if you find suspicious activity.
  3. Be alert for impersonation attempts. TD says it may contact customers to verify account activity, but it will never ask for an online-banking password or card PIN during that process. See TD’s U.S. security-center guidance.
  4. Consider your identity information separately. Because the reported data may include Social Security numbers and dates of birth, monitoring your credit reports for unfamiliar accounts or inquiries is a reasonable precaution. A separate Massachusetts-hosted TD sample notice from September 2026 recommends checking statements and monitoring credit reports, but it concerns a different incident—not the 2024 event or its recipients. View that separate sample notice.
  5. Change a password if you have reason to suspect account compromise. TD recommends changing passwords regularly. Never share your password or PIN with someone claiming to verify activity.

The available incident report does not establish that customers need a paid identity-protection product. Start with verifying the notice, reviewing transactions, and contacting the bank about anything suspicious.
