The result is a comparison of a fixed basket—not proof that Aldi is cheapest for every shopper, product, store or week.
How much did the 17-item basket cost?
CHOICE’s report, updated 24 September 2026, gives national averages for the basket both excluding and including applicable specials. Aldi was the least expensive in both comparisons.

These are averages from CHOICE’s fieldwork at 104 supermarkets across 27 Australian locations in June 2026; prices and specials may have changed since then. CHOICE’s survey results do not establish what a shopper would pay for a different set of products or at a particular store.
What did the survey find in Western Australia?
In the state comparison, which includes specials on eligible non-fruit and vegetable items, Aldi had the lowest reported average in WA:

The published state comparison also lists Aldi as lowest in Queensland, South Australia, the ACT, NSW and Victoria. It does not list Aldi for Tasmania or the Northern Territory, so the result should not be extended to those states and territories.
What was in CHOICE’s basket?
The 17 products were chosen as commonly purchased items, not as a model of a typical household’s weekly grocery shop. The basket had eight fresh products and nine packaged products:

- Packaged: washed white potatoes, carrots, full-cream milk, Greek-style yoghurt, hommus, basmati rice, corn thins, tinned chickpeas and rolled oats.
CHOICE also reports the two parts separately. The eight-item base basket, excluding specials, averaged $40.10 at Aldi, $40.95 at Woolworths, $42.54 at Coles and $50.42 at IGA. Since March 2026, those base-basket averages had risen by $2.96 at Aldi, $0.87 at Woolworths, $2.44 at Coles and $5.00 at IGA. CHOICE says seasonal variation or freight costs could explain the increases, but it cannot identify which was responsible. The figures are specific to this basket and survey period, not a general measure of grocery inflation. CHOICE’s media release also reports that 82% of respondents to its June 2026 Consumer Pulse survey were worried about grocery costs; that is CHOICE’s survey finding, not a government statistic.
How CHOICE compared supermarket prices
Fieldworkers selected supermarkets across socioeconomic areas in capital cities and regional centres, choosing competing stores close enough to reduce location differences. They matched products as closely as possible by pack size, ingredients and country of origin, recalculating prices to a common quantity where pack sizes differed. Aldi, Coles and Woolworths baskets were mostly home-brand and fresh items; IGA’s more limited private-label range meant its basket included more branded products.

Mystery shoppers bought the specified products and supplied receipts to verify prices. When an item was unavailable, CHOICE says it bought the nearest alternative. It counted a product as a special only where there was evidence of a temporary price reduction. Fresh produce was excluded from comparisons that remove specials because temporary discounts can be difficult to distinguish from ordinary market price fluctuations. The survey is a useful like-for-like signal, but your own shopping list and current local prices are more relevant to your household. Compare unit prices—such as price per kilogram or litre—rather than relying on pack price alone, and check whether a special changes the value for the quantity you will actually use.

- Compare the products and quantities you regularly buy, not just the survey average.
- Use specials where practical, while considering whether the promotion is for a product you need and will use.
- Consider home-brand goods, frozen produce, or cheaper cuts and alternatives where they suit your budget and needs.
- Weigh price against convenience, nutrition, quality, product range and support for local producers.
A low average for a fixed basket does not necessarily mean the lowest bill for your household: product preferences, availability, travel and the mix of items in your trolley all matter.
