A report published on January 10, 2022, attributed supermarket shelf gaps in Western Australia to workers being absent while in isolation. It relayed grocers’ warning that shortages could worsen after February 5 as more West Australians were affected by COVID-19. The available report does not establish whether that forecast came true.
What the January 2022 report said
The January 10 report described the shelf gaps as the result of “COVID absenteeism”: workers being unavailable because they were in isolation. It said grocers expected the situation could get worse after February 5, when more people in Western Australia might be sidelined by the virus. These were claims and a forecast relayed by the report, rather than a confirmed later account of what happened. Read the January 10, 2022 report.
What is and is not established
- The report gave no figures for the number of absent workers, the scale of shortages, or how many stores were affected.
- It did not name specific grocers, stores, products, or locations in Western Australia.
- The available text does not verify whether shelf gaps worsened after February 5.
- A report from January 2022 cannot establish current supermarket conditions in WA.
Did shortages get worse after February 5?
The available report does not answer that question. It records a prediction made in January 2022, not evidence of the outcome. Confirming what happened would require dated reporting or other evidence from after February 5, 2022.
