Tania Lewis’ January 2024 post about a $19 breakfast in Busselton, Western Australia, set off a debate over what a café meal should cost and how much food a customer should expect. Contemporary reports described eggs, bacon and bread on the plate; Lewis said the eggs were cooked well but that the portion felt underwhelming. She also bought a $10 juice, bringing her reported spend to $29.
What was in the $19 breakfast?
PerthNow reported on 8 January 2024 that Lewis posted a photo with the caption, “$19 breakfast at Bussellton (sic). Would you pay for this?” Its description of the plate listed two small poached eggs, two slices of white bread, bacon and two butter sachets. Lewis also paid $10 for a glass of juice, according to the report, making the combined reported bill $29. PerthNow’s report and 7NEWS’ report, published 9 January 2024, provide the contemporary account.
Why did Lewis question the value?
Lewis told 7NEWS she was holidaying in Busselton and felt underwhelmed by the portion. She said the order was technically what she had asked for and that the eggs were cooked well; her criticism was about perceived value, not that the meal was inedible. “I don’t mind paying for good food if it’s good value,” she said.
She called it “basically a deconstructed bacon and egg sandwich” and said she could have bought a similar breakfast at a BP for $9. That was Lewis’s comparison, not an independently verified price comparison or a documented like-for-like alternative. She also described the $10 juice as “warm.”

Why were reactions divided?
Some commenters agreed that the portion and price represented poor value. Others suggested café overheads or Busselton’s tourist setting could help explain the bill. Those were commenters’ opinions: the reports do not establish the café’s costs or show what determined its price.
7NEWS said the post had received 170,000 views when its report was published on 9 January 2024. That is a dated figure from the time, not a current view count.

What the story can—and cannot—tell you about café prices
The incident captures a familiar personal-finance question: whether a meal’s price feels justified by its portion, quality and setting. But it is one customer’s account of one order in January 2024. It should not be treated as evidence of current Busselton prices or as proof that the price was unreasonable—or justified—by the venue’s costs.
The reviewed coverage did not name the café. Without its identity, menu, or information about the business, there is no fair basis to identify the venue or assess its pricing. Nor do the reports independently test Lewis’s petrol-station comparison. The useful takeaway is narrower: Lewis said the meal did not feel like good value for its portion, while the online response showed that other diners weighed price, quantity and café context differently.
