Target’s Perth CBD store closed on 29 May 2021, and Kmart took over the former store at 712 Hay Street Mall. Target included the location in its mid-2021 closure plans; Kmart’s current store listing confirms it remains at that address.
When did Target’s Perth CBD store close?
Target’s official business update listed Perth CBD among the stores scheduled to close in mid-2021. A contemporaneous report by The West Australian said signs at the store identified 29 May 2021 as its final trading day. That is the reported closing date, not a separately verified date for Kmart’s opening.

Target’s business update set out the network changes announced on 22 May 2020. The local report covered the specific Perth closure and the signage date: The West Australian.
Why did Target close the store?
Target described the closure as part of a chain-wide transformation, rather than setting out a separate reason specific to the Perth store. The company said the changes were intended to improve commercial viability and support its workforce. It aimed to make the business smaller, more focused, less complex and more digitally enabled so it could serve customers in stores and online.

Target said the transformation followed the first phase of a strategic review that began before the pandemic, while COVID-19 accelerated the need for change. These are Target’s stated reasons; they do not independently establish the financial performance of the Perth store.

Can Perth customers still shop at Target?
Target’s current Western Australia store finder lists locations including Subiaco, Fremantle, Innaloo, Joondalup and Armadale, but no Perth CBD store. See Target’s WA store finder for current locations.
When announcing the transition, Target said its online operations and range would continue. Its historical FAQ described delivery and collection options, including collection from other Target or Kmart stores and other collection points where available. It also said online orders could be returned by post or to a Target store within 60 days of delivery. Those were terms described at the time of the transition, not confirmation of current delivery, collection or returns policies; check Target’s current information before ordering.
