There is no confirmation in the available sources that BMW moved production from its South Carolina plant to China because of tariffs. A 2018 report described tariff costs on U.S.-built BMWs exported to China and warned that production cuts could follow; it did not report a completed transfer. BMW’s current plant page lists models still assembled in South Carolina but does not provide historical production-allocation data.
What the tariff story actually reported
BMWBLOG’s Nico DeMattia reported on August 3, 2018, that China had imposed tariffs on American-made automobiles in retaliation for U.S. tariffs on China. The article said BMW exported 80,000 SUVs from its Spartanburg, South Carolina, plant to China each year at that time, increasing the company’s costs. That figure is historical, not a current export total. Read the 2018 BMWBLOG report.
The article discussed potential production cutbacks and job losses conditionally, if further tariffs on cars imported from Germany and retaliation followed. It did not say BMW had already moved production to China, and it cannot establish current tariff rates or current export volumes.
What BMW says Spartanburg makes today
BMW’s official Plant Spartanburg page lists the X3, X5, X6, X7 and XM, including variants, among the vehicles assembled at the site. BMW says about half of the plant’s vehicles are exported to nearly 120 countries. It also reports about $9 billion in BMW Group U.S. export value for 2025, attributing that figure to the U.S. Department of Commerce. The figure is BMW’s attribution, not an independently verified Commerce figure here. See BMW’s Plant Spartanburg information.

The same page says more than 7.3 million vehicles have been assembled at Spartanburg since 1994. These facts show the plant’s scale and export role, but they do not reveal how many vehicles go to China now or whether production has shifted between U.S. and Chinese plants.
What is—and is not—established about a move to China
The evidence supports a narrower conclusion than the headline claim: BMW has faced tariff exposure on vehicles shipped from the United States to China, and a 2018 report warned that production reductions were possible. The sources do not identify a model, date, or volume for a move of production from Spartanburg to China. BMW’s current model list is not a before-and-after production comparison, and the sources do not quantify any resulting U.S. job or supply-chain impact.

It is also important to distinguish where a car is assembled from where it is sold. An export shipment crosses a border and may face tariffs; assembling a vehicle in another country could change that exposure, but the available sources do not document such a decision or its consequences in BMW’s case. The 2018 report is historical context, not a guide to tariffs in force today.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why this matters to U.S. manufacturing and workers
Spartanburg is a significant U.S. export operation: BMW says roughly half of its vehicles from the plant go abroad. If a manufacturer changes where it builds vehicles, the effects could involve local production, employment and suppliers, but the sources here do not establish that such a change occurred or provide a job-impact estimate. For households following the issue, the practical takeaway is to treat claims about a factory move, layoffs or current tariff costs as unverified unless they are tied to a specific BMW announcement or current, dated reporting.
