What did Take-Two agree to buy?
On March 27, 2024, Take-Two Interactive Software announced a definitive agreement to acquire The Gearbox Entertainment Company from Embracer Group for an announced value of $460 million. Take-Two said the consideration would consist entirely of newly issued Take-Two common shares. The stated value was on a debt-free, cash-free basis with normalized working capital, and closing was subject to customary conditions, including regulatory approvals. Embracer separately described the purchase price as $460 million, or SEK 4.9 billion, on a cash- and debt-free basis and subject to customary adjustments. Embracer’s March 28, 2024 announcement identifies which assets were part of the sale and which it retained.
Which Gearbox assets were included—and which were retained?
The deal was not a transfer of every company or publishing right with a Gearbox connection. Embracer listed Gearbox Software, Gearbox Montréal, Gearbox Studio Quebec, and the Borderlands and Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands franchises among the assets being divested. It retained Gearbox Publishing San Francisco, including publishing rights for Remnant and Hyper Light Breaker, as well as Cryptic Studios, Lost Boys Interactive, and Captured Dimensions. What did the deal mean for Borderlands 4?
At the time of the acquisition announcement, Take-Two said Gearbox would operate as a studio within 2K, led by Gearbox founder and CEO Randy Pitchford and his management team. Take-Two also said Gearbox and 2K were actively developing the next Borderlands installment. That was the game’s status in March 2024.
The game is now Borderlands 4, and the development-era wording is out of date: 2K says it released worldwide on September 12, 2025. The publisher lists PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. 2K’s game page and Take-Two’s launch announcement establish the release and those platforms.
What 2K says the game is about
According to 2K, Borderlands 4 takes place on Kairos and features a new cast of Vault Hunters, Action Skills, skill trees, and dynamic movement abilities as they oppose the Timekeeper. This is the publisher’s description, not an independent gameplay assessment. 2K’s official game page

What the deal does—and does not—tell players
Take-Two’s announced transaction connected Gearbox and the Borderlands franchise with 2K, which Take-Two said would house the studio. That establishes the corporate relationship and the companies’ stated development plans; it does not, by itself, establish a particular change in gameplay, reception, sales, or future release schedule.

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick called the acquisition “an exciting moment for Take-Two” and said it would strengthen the company’s creative talent and owned intellectual property, including Borderlands.
