The headline “Tech Billionaire Goes Missing After Superyacht Sinks” described the breaking-news situation the next day; it is not the final account. A UK safety investigation later issued an interim report, while Italian authorities pursued a separate criminal investigation.
Who was the tech billionaire reported missing?
Mike Lynch, a British technology entrepreneur, was one of six people reported missing after the Bayesian sank. That count reflected the situation reported on August 20, 2024, not the eventual casualty total. Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter, Hannah, were among the seven people who died, according to the UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB).
The original Futurism headline, published August 20, captured that early uncertainty. Its report is useful as a record of what was known then, but later official reporting established the final loss of life. What happened to the Bayesian?
The Bayesian was a UK-registered sailing yacht that foundered near Porticello, on Sicily’s northern coast, on August 19, 2024. Of the 22 people aboard, 15 escaped and were recovered ashore; seven died, the MAIB reports. The US National Transportation Safety Board also maintains an investigation page with a vessel description and rescue account: NTSB: Capsizing and Sinking of Yacht Bayesian.

In June 2025, the recovered wreck was brought to a Sicilian port for further examination. The Associated Press reported that Italian authorities were conducting a criminal investigation. AP’s report on the wreck’s arrival describes that recovery stage.
What does the interim report say about why it sank?
The MAIB’s interim report, published May 15, 2025, examined the vessel’s loss as a safety investigation and discussed extreme wind and stability. That is an interim safety finding, not a final determination of every cause or of legal responsibility. Early coverage discussed a possible waterspout based on witness accounts, but that explanation should not be presented as an established final cause. The MAIB safety investigation and the Italian criminal investigation are separate processes. The MAIB report describes its safety work alongside a criminal investigation led by the Termini Imerese Public Prosecutor’s Office in Sicily. The available cited accounts do not establish the final outcome of that Italian investigation or a final legal finding about responsibility.
