TNPSC Group 2 645 vacancies: what the number means
TNPSC’s original announcement stated 645 vacancies for the Combined Civil Services Examination-II covering Group II and Group IIA. That is the initial announced count, not a confirmed current vacancy total. Notification No. 11/2025 describes the vacancy numbers as tentative and says they may be modified before counselling. TNPSC’s original press release announced the 645 figure; the reviewed official notices do not establish one final aggregate after all addenda and counselling adjustments.
Which services and posts did the recruitment cover?
The examination covers posts in two services: Group II and Group IIA. The notification provides post-wise details, including department, vacancy count, pay level, age criteria and qualifications. It also says post- and unit-wise distributions would be announced later. Since posts differ, the original aggregate cannot tell a candidate how many vacancies remain in a particular post or unit.

Eligibility depends on the post
There is no single degree or age rule that applies uniformly to every post in the combined recruitment. Educational or technical qualifications and age limits vary by post, and applicable reservation categories or concessions can change the age criteria. The notification also sets out Tamil-language knowledge requirements and rules for supporting documents.
To assess eligibility, identify the exact post and category, then check the corresponding row in Notification No. 11/2025 and any applicable addenda. Do not rely on a broad summary of Group II or Group IIA eligibility when deciding whether a specific qualification or age limit applies.
How the Group II and Group IIA selection process works
The recruitment uses a common preliminary examination as a screening stage, followed by separate main examinations for Group II and Group IIA. TNPSC states that preliminary marks do not count toward final merit. In the notification’s words, the “Preliminary Examination is meant to serve as a screening test only” and the marks of candidates admitted to the main examination “will not be counted for determining their final order of merit.”
The notification contains separate syllabus details for the preliminary and main examinations. Do not assume the two groups have identical mains requirements. Forester selection includes an endurance test as an additional stage.

Fees and descriptive-exam requirements in the 2025 notification
The fees below are those set for the 2025 cycle, not current fees for a future recruitment. Eligible candidates could receive fee exemption under the notification’s rules.
| Fee | 2025 notification amount |
|---|---|
| Preliminary examination | ₹100, subject to eligible fee exemption |
| Main examination, for a shortlisted candidate without exemption | ₹150 |
| Main examinations for candidates shortlisted for both Group II and Group IIA, without exemption | ₹300 |
For descriptive examinations, TNPSC’s instructions require candidates to carry a black-ink pen, identification proof and hall ticket. Follow the relevant exam instructions for the applicable stage.
