The Cook Labor Government announced a $400 electricity credit for Western Australian households in its 2024-25 Budget on 9 May 2024. It was presented as a broad household measure, not a discount limited to families experiencing financial hardship. The later $700 household credit combined the State’s $400 with a separate $300 contribution from the Australian Government.
What was the $400 WA electricity credit?
The State credit was part of the Cook Labor Government’s 2024-25 Budget announcement. The Government said it expected the measure to reach 1.1 million households; that was an announced estimate, not a verified count of final recipients. The broader Budget announcement described $762 million in new cost-of-living support. WA Government announcement, 9 May 2024
The Budget papers described the State credit as applying to WA households and small businesses with annual electricity consumption below 50 megawatt-hours. The announcement did not describe the household credit as means-tested or restricted to people in hardship. 2024-25 WA Budget papers
Why did some reports refer to a $700 credit?
The $700 figure was the combined household relief from two governments, not a $700 State payment. Western Australia contributed $400, and the Australian Government added a separate $300 household credit. For Synergy and Horizon Power customers, the combined amount was to be credited automatically in two instalments of $350. WA Government Household Electricity Credit fact sheet

What did the Government say the credit was for?
Treasurer Rita Saffioti said the Government’s “new power bill relief” was intended to ease pressure on Western Australians and put downward pressure on inflation. This was the stated purpose of the policy, not evidence that it produced a measured reduction in hardship or inflation. What to take from the 2024 announcement
- The State announced a $400 credit in the 2024-25 Budget; it was not a hardship-only benefit.
- The $700 figure included a separate $300 Commonwealth contribution.
- The State Budget papers set an annual electricity-consumption boundary below 50 megawatt-hours for covered households and small businesses.
- The alternative application deadline was 31 January 2025, and has passed. These details concern the 2024-25 measure, not any current or replacement assistance.
