The company said the cuts would not affect in-store teams. That announcement also included a limited office-location update; Starbucks later made a separate, broader change to support partners’ office attendance, requiring at least four in-office days a week beginning in October 2025.
How many Starbucks corporate employees were laid off?
On February 24, 2025, CEO Brian Niccol announced the elimination of 1,100 current support partner roles and several hundred additional open and unfilled positions. The 1,100 figure refers to current roles; the additional positions were vacancies, not another count of employees being laid off. Starbucks restated those figures in its April 29, 2025, second-quarter results.
Starbucks described the affected group as non-retail support partners. It said impacted employees would receive a comprehensive severance package, including pay, healthcare and career transition services. The company characterized the restructuring as an effort to simplify its structure, remove layers and duplication, and build smaller teams. Those are Starbucks’ stated aims, not independently established results. (Starbucks’ February 24 announcement; Q2 FY2025 results)
Were Starbucks baristas and other store employees affected?
Starbucks said the February role reduction applied to non-retail support partners and did not affect in-store teams or its investments in store hours. The announced number therefore should not be read as a count of baristas or store-level employees losing their jobs.

Did Starbucks end remote work?
No single February announcement ended remote work for all support employees. In February, Starbucks said North American vice presidents and more senior leaders were expected to work with their teams in Seattle or Toronto at least three days a week. Director-and-below partners who were already remote would generally retain that status, while future roles would generally be based in Seattle or Toronto unless designated enterprise-remote. The company said markets outside the United States and Canada would have local expectations.
Starbucks changed the policy again in July 2025. The chronology matters: the February announcement concerned both a job reduction and a limited location-policy adjustment; the July announcement changed the attendance minimum and expanded the location requirement for people leaders.

What is Starbucks’ current office attendance policy?
In July 2025, Starbucks announced that support partners would move from three required in-office days to a minimum of four, with Monday through Thursday designated as common days. The change was set to begin with the new fiscal year in October 2025. CEO Brian Niccol described the rationale this way: “We are reestablishing our in-office culture because we do our best work when we’re together.” That is the company’s explanation for the policy, not an independent finding about the effect of office attendance.
The July update also gave Support Center people leaders 12 months to meet a Seattle-or-Toronto location requirement. Associated Press reported that employees who report to those leaders were not themselves required to relocate. AP said future hires and lateral moves would need to be based in Seattle or Toronto. Starbucks did not disclose how many employees were working remotely or how many were people leaders. (Starbucks’ July policy announcement; Associated Press coverage)

How the February and July announcements differ
| Issue | February 2025 | July 2025 update |
|---|---|---|
| What changed | Elimination of 1,100 current support partner roles and several hundred open positions, plus a limited location-policy adjustment. | Office attendance and location expectations; not a new layoff announcement. |
| Attendance | North American VP-and-above leaders expected to work with teams in Seattle or Toronto at least three days a week. | Support partners required to be in the office at least four days a week, Monday through Thursday as common days, beginning in October 2025. |
| Location | VP-and-above leaders in North America had Seattle-or-Toronto expectations; other markets would set local expectations. | Seattle-or-Toronto location requirement extended to Support Center people leaders, with a 12-month timeframe. |
| Existing remote status | Director-and-below partners already working remotely would generally keep that status under the February message. | AP reported that individual employees reporting to people leaders were not required to relocate; future hires and lateral moves would need to be based in Seattle or Toronto. |
Company context
Starbucks’ fiscal 2025 Form 10-K says the support-organization restructuring was part of its Back to Starbucks strategy, with stated goals that included efficiency, accountability, simplicity and better integration. The filing reports approximately 381,000 employees worldwide as of September 28, 2025. That company-wide figure provides context for Starbucks’ size; it does not indicate the share or number of employees affected by the support-role cuts.
