Sprintax is an online tax-preparation service for many U.S. nonresident filers. Its published individual-user price is $54.95 for federal preparation, with state returns and several forms or support options priced separately. The online product does not support dual-status returns, and federal e-filing depends on eligibility. Before paying, confirm that Sprintax supports your tax situation and check the full order total.

What Sprintax does and who can use it

Sprintax Returns guides users through questions about their circumstances, reviews applicable allowances and deductions, and prepares forms for eligible nonresident filers. Its listed services include federal and state tax preparation, Form 8843, Form W-7 for ITIN applications, and Form 843 for FICA claims. The precise forms and charges depend on the filer’s situation and any institutional access arrangement. Sprintax’s FAQ describes the service and its available forms.

The product is designed for international students, scholars, teachers, and researchers, including many people on F, J, M, or Q visas. Some temporary visitors or workers on H, L, B, P, or O statuses may also qualify if they are nonresidents for the full tax year. Visa category alone does not settle eligibility: tax residency and the details of the person’s year matter.

Dual-status filers are not supported online

Sprintax says its online software does not support tax return preparation for dual-status taxpayers—people who are nonresidents for part of the year and residents for the remainder. The company says it may review unsupported situations for offline preparation with separate pricing. Ask about case-specific options rather than beginning an online filing that does not fit your status.

How much does Sprintax cost in 2026?

Sprintax’s FAQ lists these individual-user prices for both SprintaxNR and SprintaxNRPro. They are published rates, not a guaranteed quote for every filer. Check the order breakdown for the current price and any additional charges before paying; the FAQ says credit cards are accepted. Sprintax FAQ pricing

Service Published price
Federal preparation (Form 1040-NR / 1040-NR-EZ) $54.95
State tax preparation $49.95 per state
State return only $59.95
Post-filing support $29.95
Form 8843 $19.95
ITIN preparation (Form W-7) $19.95
FICA preparation (Form 843) $19.95

These prices were displayed in Sprintax’s FAQ retrieved October 8, 2026; confirm them in the live order flow because prices and available services can change. A filer who needs a state return, an additional form, or post-filing support may pay more than the federal-preparation price. Offline service for an unsupported situation requires a case review and separate pricing.

University access codes

Some schools provide codes that cover some or all of a filing. Coverage is institution-specific, so check what the code includes and whether it remains available. For example, the University of Texas at Austin said its code covered one simple federal filing and Form 8843, while state filings and ITIN applications could still incur fees. UT Austin also reported that all its free 2026 Sprintax codes had been distributed by June 8, 2026; that notice applies to its allocation, not to other institutions. UT Austin tax guidance

Features, filing methods, and practical limits

  • Residency and treaty review: University guidance describes a questionnaire-based assessment of tax residency and a review of potential treaty benefits, deductions, and credits. The result depends on the filer’s facts and eligibility. UT Austin tax guidance and USC tax guidance
  • Federal and state returns: Sprintax prepares nonresident federal returns and can prepare state returns. State preparation is separately priced in its published individual schedule.
  • Additional forms: The listed services include Form 8843, W-7 ITIN preparation, and Form 843 FICA preparation; each may add a fee.
  • Amended returns: Sprintax’s FAQ describes a route for preparing an amended federal return. For a state amendment, it directs users to contact Sprintax for more information. Sprintax FAQ
  • Federal e-filing: An MIT workshop dated February 26, 2026, says eligible users may see an option to e-file a federal return. In the workflow described by the workshop, state returns and standalone Form 8843 still need to be mailed. Availability depends on eligibility and may change, so follow the current instructions shown for your return. MIT tax-filing workshop information
  • Documents: USC lists a passport, visa or immigration information, entry and exit history, an SSN or ITIN if assigned, and income forms such as W-2, 1042-S, and 1099 among the documents to gather. What do Sprintax reviews say?

Trustpilot can help a prospective user assess reported experiences with support and ease of use, but reviews do not establish whether a tax treatment is correct for a particular person. Its profile is dynamic, and the views retrieved October 8, 2026, showed an unresolved discrepancy: a search result displayed 5,191 reviews and a 4.7 score, while the opened profile displayed a 4.5 TrustScore. Because those figures did not agree, this article does not present one as a settled current rating. Check the live profile if the rating matters to your decision. Sprintax on Trustpilot

The opened profile included positive reports about responsive support and an individual complaint alleging incorrect state-return guidance and a charge for post-filing review. Those are individual accounts, not verified findings about Sprintax’s overall performance. Sprintax’s own testimonials and rating claims are company-selected promotional material, so distinguish them from the independent platform profile. Sprintax

For accuracy, focus on whether the service supports your filing status and whether the information you enter is complete. USC’s international office warns that false tax filings can seriously affect future immigration eligibility and status; that is a general warning about tax filings, not a finding about Sprintax. If you believe a filing is wrong or your situation falls outside the supported cases, seek qualified, case-specific tax help. USC tax guidance

How to decide whether Sprintax fits

  1. Confirm your tax status. Determine whether you are a nonresident for the full tax year. If you are dual status, the online product is not supported for your return.
  2. Check forms and filing method. Identify whether you need a federal return, state return, Form 8843, an ITIN application, or another service, and verify the current e-file or mailing instructions for each.
  3. Ask your school about access. If you have a university code, verify its coverage and availability directly with the institution; do not assume it pays for state work or other add-ons.
  4. Review the final price. Compare the order total with the published schedule, including state preparation and any separately priced forms or support.
  5. Use reviews for experience, not tax rulings. Treat customer reports as anecdotal context, and evaluate tax eligibility and accuracy against your own facts.
