No authoritative figure for Stephen Hawking’s personal net worth is established by the available official and institutional sources. His books sold millions of copies, but sales totals do not reveal how much he received, what he retained, or the value of his assets and liabilities when he died.
Was Stephen Hawking’s net worth publicly established?
No. The Stephen Hawking Estate’s biography and contact information, along with a Royal Society biographical memoir, do not disclose a personal net-worth figure, estate valuation, balance sheet, royalty terms, or documented calculation that would support one. A precise number repeated on celebrity-wealth websites should not be treated as verified without a primary record or transparent accounting behind it.

Hawking died at home in Cambridge on 14 March 2018, according to the Stephen Hawking Estate biography. The date of death is not a measure of the value of his estate.
What his book sales do—and do not—tell us
A Brief History of Time was a major commercial success, but the published sales figures count copies, not money paid to Hawking. The Estate biography reports more than 20 million copies sold and translations into more than 40 languages; it does not give a reporting year for those totals. A 2019 Royal Society memoir gives a separate figure: more than 10 million copies in the book’s first 20 years. These figures describe different time frames and should not be confused with royalties or personal wealth.

- Used Book in Good Condition
The Royal Society memoir says the book had an income-generating purpose as well as a scientific one: “Although the dissemination of science among a broader public certainly was one of Hawking’s aims in writing the book, he also had the serious purpose of generating income.” It notes the considerable needs of Hawking’s family, nurses, healthcare helpers, and increasingly expensive equipment. The memoir supplies no royalty rate or earnings total.
Why sales cannot be converted into net worth
Net worth is generally the value of assets minus liabilities at a particular time. Book sales alone cannot establish it. The available sources do not quantify:
Rank #2
- Royalties or other income paid: Copies sold do not show the amount Hawking received after contractual terms, publisher arrangements, taxes, or other costs.
- Income retained: Earnings over a lifetime are not the same as wealth held at death; expenses and other financial obligations matter.
- Assets and liabilities: The cited sources provide no complete inventory or valuation of either.
- Estate value: No estate valuation is reported in these sources, and it cannot be inferred from the book’s sales figures.
What is known about Hawking’s intellectual-property rights?
The Estate’s contact page says Space Time Publications Ltd owns the registered Stephen Hawking trademark and other intellectual-property rights, and authorizes a limited number of commercial activities. The page does not identify partners or disclose revenue. Ownership and licensing of rights therefore provide no basis for calculating Hawking’s personal net worth or the value of his estate.

For readers interested in the work behind the sales figures, Simon & Schuster’s official Stephen Hawking author page lists A Brief History of Time among his books. The book’s commercial reach is evidence of its readership, not a verified financial disclosure.
