Why U.S. Soybean Prices Hit a 15-Month High in October 2025—and What Changed Since

Soybean futures hit a 15-month high in October 2025 on hopes that trade talks would restore Chinese demand. The rally reflected commitments and bookings, not confirmed deliveries—and the market had changed by 2026.

U.S. soybean futures reached a 15-month high in October 2025 as traders anticipated that U.S.–China trade negotiations would revive Chinese demand. The rally reflected expectations and reported purchase commitments—not proof that the promised volume had already shipped. By September and October 2026, prices were at a higher nominal level, but trade uncertainty, tariffs, harvest supply and competition from South America remained important counterweights.

What the 15-month high meant

The headline refers to a specific episode in October 2025, not the market on October 8, 2026. Reuters reported that the most-active Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) soybean futures contract reached an intraday high of $11.14-1/2 per bushel and closed at $11.07-3/4 per bushel on the day U.S. officials announced Chinese purchase plans. A separate Reuters report put January soybean futures at $11.08 per bushel, the highest level on a continuous chart since July 2024. Those figures describe different measures: one is an intraday and closing quote for the most-active contract, the other a January contract quote and a continuous-chart comparison. Reuters’ report on the October 2025 move and its January-contract report give the respective details.

Why trade talks lifted soybean futures

China had avoided U.S. soybeans during the tariff dispute and shifted purchases toward South American suppliers. The market therefore reacted to signs that negotiations could reopen or expand demand for U.S. crops. U.S. officials said China would buy at least 12 million metric tons in 2025 and at least 25 million metric tons annually in 2026, 2027 and 2028, Reuters reported. These were reported commitments, not a tally of completed imports. The same report noted that the 25-million-ton annual target was below U.S. shipments to China in some recent years. Reuters’ account of the reported targets provides the figures and context.

Before the leaders’ meeting, Chinese state-owned COFCO had bought three cargoes from the autumn U.S. harvest, according to Reuters reporting republished by The Western Producer. Commodity broker Matt Wiegand described the purchases as a beginning, not evidence of a large-scale return: “It’s a start, but three cargoes is not a huge number.” The Western Producer’s October 29, 2025 report covers the cargoes and quote.

How to tell a promise from actual demand

Trade announcements and market prices are not the same thing as cargoes arriving in China. A useful way to read claims about purchases is to separate four stages:

  1. Political announcement: officials state a target or commitment. This can change traders’ expectations immediately, but does not establish that a buyer has placed an order.
  2. Buyer booking: an importer books cargoes. This is evidence of a commercial transaction, though the booking alone does not mean the beans have left the United States or arrived at their destination.
  3. Export sale or shipment reporting: public sales and shipment data provide evidence of sales activity or cargo movement. Check which measure a report uses.
  4. Delivery: the beans reach the buyer. This is the clearest confirmation of completed imports.

Futures can rise at the announcement stage, when the market prices in a possible improvement in demand. Follow-up evidence matters because targets may not be met on schedule, and other suppliers can cover buyers’ needs. In September 2026, Reuters reported that China had passed halfway toward its 25-million-ton annual commitment; separate late-September coverage described weak feed demand, poor crush margins and South American supplies as constraints on prospects for U.S. cargoes. Reuters’ September report on the commitment and its report on demand and competition illustrate why the stages matter.

What changed by September and October 2026

The October 2025 “15-month high” is a historical description, not a current ranking. Reuters reported that the most-active CBOT soybean contract reached $13.30-1/4 per bushel intraday at 0504 GMT on September 17, 2026, near a nearly three-year high. On October 1, Reuters quoted the most-active contract at $13.04-1/4 per bushel at 1130 GMT. Farm Futures’ October 7 analysis said early-October futures had retreated below $13 after disappointment over the Trump–Xi summit; it also described prices as more than $2.30, or 22%, above their end-2025 level. These are dated, attributed market reports, not a live quote or a complete historical price series. Reuters’ September market report, Reuters’ October 1 report and Farm Futures’ October 7 analysis provide the dated context.

The rally and pullback show why a price headline should be read with its contract and quote time. An intraday high is not a closing price; a January contract is not necessarily the most-active contract; and “highest since” depends on the chart and comparison date cited. The October 2025 prices should not be compared with later figures without preserving those distinctions.

What can offset optimism about Chinese buying

Trade optimism is only one influence on soybean prices. The reports point to several factors that can support or limit U.S. export prospects:

  • Tariffs and trade relief: Reuters reported on September 30, 2026 that U.S. beans retained an additional 10% tariff in the trade dispute. On October 1, traders were also watching whether soybeans would be included in tariff reductions; Reuters reported that the crop had been left out of a list after the summit.
  • Competing supply: Chinese importers had covered much of their near-term demand with Brazilian and Argentine beans, according to Reuters’ late-September report. Their prices and availability affect whether U.S. cargoes are competitive.
  • Chinese demand economics: weak animal-feed demand and negative soybean-crush margins can reduce importers’ incentive to buy, even if political relations improve.
  • U.S. harvest and crop size: harvest progress and the size of the crop affect how much supply is available in the near term. Farm Futures cited a potential record U.S. crop arriving during harvest as a source of uncertainty.
  • Supply-and-demand outlooks: traders watch USDA data and export outlooks for revisions that can change expectations. The cited October 1 Reuters report identified a USDA stocks report as a watched input.

The tariff and import-demand factors are described in Reuters’ September 30 report; the tariff-list, harvest and USDA-report context appears in Reuters’ October 1 report. Farm Futures discusses the harvest and post-summit retreat in its October 7 analysis.

This meal is also crucial for cattle, other farm animals, and pets, ensuring they receive the necessary nutrients for growth and development. A great addition to feed mixes for cowpeas and other legumes.
  • ECONOMIC AND NUTRITIONAL: As the most economically important bean globally, soybeans provide essential vegetable protein for millions and are key ingredients in hundreds of chemical products. A 60-pound bushel of our soybeans seed yields about 11 pounds of crude soybean oil and 47 pounds of soybean meal. Beneficial for producing shelf-stable goods for long-term use.

A practical checklist for reading the next soybean-price headline

  • Identify the contract: January futures, the most-active contract or a continuous-chart series.
  • Check the date and quote time, and whether the figure is an intraday high or a settlement.
  • For a claim about Chinese purchases, ask whether it is an official target, a booking, a reported export sale, a shipment or a completed delivery.
  • Check whether tariff treatment changed and whether soybeans were included in any announced trade relief.
  • Compare U.S. offers with Brazilian and Argentine supply, and consider reported Chinese feed demand and crush margins.
  • Watch U.S. harvest and crop estimates alongside USDA supply-and-demand and export outlooks.
