Spirit Airlines announced in July 2025 that it planned to furlough approximately 270 pilots beginning November 1, alongside downgrading approximately 140 captains to first officers effective October 1. Those were separate staffing actions, and Spirit said they were intended to align staffing with projected 2026 flight volume. This is now a historical story: on May 2, 2026, Spirit announced an orderly wind-down, cancelled all flights and said it had no additional funding available.
Why was Spirit furloughing hundreds of pilots?
In its third-quarter 2025 Form 10-Q, Spirit said the announced staffing actions were intended to align staffing with projected flight volume for 2026. The filing reported that the airline planned approximately 270 pilot furloughs effective November 1, 2025, and approximately 140 captain downgrades effective October 1, 2025. Spirit’s Form 10-Q
The financial backdrop was severe. Spirit’s filing recorded a second-quarter 2025 net loss of $245.831 million. The Associated Press reported that the airline cited weak domestic leisure travel demand and other operating uncertainty, and disclosed substantial doubt about its ability to continue as a going concern. The loss provides context for the distress, but Spirit’s stated rationale for the staffing changes was projected flight volume—not a claim that the quarterly loss alone caused them. How many Spirit pilots were affected?
| Action | Announced number | Timing and status |
|---|---|---|
| Pilot furloughs | Approximately 270 | Announced in July 2025; effective November 1, 2025, according to Spirit’s filing. |
| Captain downgrades to first officers | Approximately 140 | Announced in July 2025; effective October 1, 2025, according to Spirit’s filing. A downgrade is not a furlough. |
| Additional pilot furloughs | Up to 365 | Anticipated for the first quarter of 2026 in the filing; the cited material does not establish how many, if any, took effect before Spirit’s wind-down. |
| Additional captain downgrades | Up to 170 | Anticipated for the first quarter of 2026; the cited material does not establish how many were completed. |
The first two figures describe the July 2025 announced plan; the later figures were forward-looking estimates, not confirmed counts of completed actions. Spirit subsequently announced its wind-down on May 2, 2026. Spirit’s Form 10-Q SEC filing index for the May 2026 announcement

What changed after the furlough announcement?
On May 2, 2026, Spirit announced it had begun an orderly wind-down, cancelled all flights and had no additional funding available. The company’s president and CEO, Dave Davis, said in the announcement: “Sustaining the business required hundreds of millions of additional dollars of liquidity that Spirit simply does not have and could not procure.” Spirit wind-down announcement distributed by PR Newswire
That later development changes how to read the 2025 staffing story: the announced furloughs and downgrades were part of an earlier effort to match staffing to projected flying, while the 2026 wind-down ended Spirit’s flight operations. The available cited material does not establish the outcome for each affected pilot or the number of anticipated Q1 2026 actions completed.

How this differed from Spirit’s 2024 pilot furlough plan
Spirit announced a separate plan in April 2024 to furlough approximately 260 pilots effective September 1, 2024. The airline linked that earlier round to aircraft grounded by Pratt & Whitney GTF engine availability issues and deferred Airbus deliveries. It should not be added to the July 2025 figure: the announcements concerned different periods and stated different operational contexts. Spirit’s April 2024 SEC-filed announcement
