Contemporary market reports described the move as limit down and linked the selling mainly to uncertainty about Chinese demand and a possible delay to the planned Trump-Xi summit. That is a recap of one historical session—not today’s soybean price or a forecast.
What happened to soybean futures on March 16?
The May 2026 CBOT soybean contract closed at $11.55¼ per bushel, down 70 cents, according to Successful Farming. Pro Farmer also characterized the decline as the daily limit and a more-than-two-week low. In The DeLong Co.’s same-day commentary, May futures settled at $11.5525, with a synthetic close of $11.5025; July futures settled at $11.675, with a synthetic close of $11.63. DeLong reported both May and July limit down. November 2026 new-crop futures fell 39.25 cents to $11.2225.
The quoted $11.55¼ figure is a CBOT futures close, not a guaranteed price a farmer received. A local cash bid can differ because of location, basis, delivery terms, and timing; the reports do not give a specific farm’s cash price.
Why did soybeans fall 70 cents?
Market commentary that day emphasized uncertainty over Chinese purchases. Successful Farming reported that President Donald Trump had threatened to delay his planned summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping amid a request for China to help reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The report said U.S. and Chinese negotiators were meeting in Paris and described the talks as “remarkably stable.” It also cited overnight profit-taking and doubts about Chinese demand.

- Disease-Smart Cultivation: edamame seeds to plant resist common pests when grown in full sun and evenly moist soil; gardening kit growers mulch to conserve water and pick bright green pods before they yellow.
Successful Farming quoted a Commstock report saying that the prospect of rescheduling the meeting had fueled the row-crop selloff, and that soybeans had already been pricing in an additional 8 million metric tons of purchases by China, as indicated by fund long positions. Attribute that explanation to the Commstock report: it is a contemporaneous interpretation, not proof that one headline alone caused the price move.
The DeLong Co.’s account said officials did not discuss an additional 8 million metric tons of U.S. soybean purchases during the talks. It reported U.S. officials’ claim that a 12-million-metric-ton commitment had been fulfilled and Chinese officials’ confirmation of an agreement to buy 25 million metric tons of U.S. soybeans annually over the next three years. Those are figures as reported in DeLong’s commentary, not independently verified here. DeLong also quoted Trump as saying, “we may delay.” Its account said Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent attributed any delay to logistics and the president’s preference to remain in the United States during the conflict with Iran, rather than to a dispute with China.

Quick Recap
Best Value
- HEIRLOOM VARIETY & HIGH YIELD: Outsidepride soy bean seeds is a robust heirloom strain known for its high yield, producing over 3 bushels per acre more than the popular Manokin variety, making it a valuable choice for maximizing harvest output. This variety is perfect for outdoor gardening enthusiasts looking to optimize their yard space.
- RICH IN PROTEIN & OIL WITH VERSATILE USES: Containing about 18% oil and 38% protein, this soybean variety is perfect for producing high-quality soy bean oil and protein-rich meal. These soybeans can be processed into a wide range of products, including soy milk powder, soy flour, soy protein, tofu, and various industrial non-food products, showcasing its versatility. Ideal for making various soy-based meals such as edamame snacks.
- OPTIMAL PLANTING GUIDELINES FOR MAXIMUM YIELD: For best results, plant soybean seeds at a depth of 0.75 to 1.5 inches, with row spacing between 7.5 and 15 inches, depending on soil type and tillage. This ensures uniform seed placement and optimal growth, adapting well to midwestern states and capturing a significant percentage of non-GMO acres.
- HIGH-PROTEIN ANIMAL FEED: The high-protein fiber left after oil extraction is ideal for animal feed, particularly for poultry and swine industries, which consume over half of the processed soybean meal. This meal is also crucial for cattle, other farm animals, and pets, ensuring they receive the necessary nutrients for growth and development. A great addition to feed mixes for cowpeas and other legumes.
- ECONOMIC AND NUTRITIONAL: As the most economically important bean globally, soybeans provide essential vegetable protein for millions and are key ingredients in hundreds of chemical products. A 60-pound bushel of our soybeans seed yields about 11 pounds of crude soybean oil and 47 pounds of soybean meal. Beneficial for producing shelf-stable goods for long-term use.

What the March 16 close does—and does not—tell you
- It records one session. The close and related figures describe March 16, 2026, not a current quote.
- It is a futures benchmark, not a farm’s net sale price. Cash prices depend on the local bid and basis as well as delivery details.
- The explanation is market interpretation. Reports highlighted China-demand uncertainty, summit timing, and profit-taking; they do not establish a single proven cause or confirm what ultimately happened to the reported purchase plans.
