How to Convert a Gift Card to Naira Safely: A Step-by-Step Guide

A safer gift-card exchange starts with issuer terms, a written net-payout quote, independent checks on the service, and a complete transaction record.

To convert a gift card to naira with less risk, first check whether its issuer permits transfer or resale. Then get a current written quote for the exact card and confirm every deduction, the net naira payout, and the payment terms before sharing any card code. Independently verify the exchange service, save the terms and transaction records, and do not assume that a provider’s own claims prove it is safe.

Before you start: identify the card and its restrictions

Write down the card brand, issuing country or region, currency, denomination, available balance, expiry date, and any restrictions on use. These details can affect whether a service accepts the card and what it offers. Do not assume that two cards with the same brand name have identical terms if they were issued for different regions.

Check the issuer’s current terms for transfer, resale, and sharing redemption codes. Permission varies by card and issuer; there is no basis to assume resale is always allowed or always prohibited. If the terms do not answer the question, contact the issuer using a contact channel you independently confirm is official. Avoid sharing a code just to ask whether resale is permitted.

Step-by-step: check an exchange before sending a code

  1. Get a quote for the exact card. Provide only the information needed for a quote, such as brand, region, currency, and denomination. Ask for the current rate and how long the quote remains valid. Rates and fees can change, so do not rely on an old screenshot or a general rate advertisement.
  2. Confirm the amount you will actually receive. Ask for every fee or deduction and the final net payout in naira. Have the service state the payment method, expected processing time, and what happens if the card is rejected or its balance differs from what you reported. No live rate, fee schedule, or payout time has been independently verified here.
  3. Verify the operator and its support channel. Check the service’s identity, current terms, and contact details independently. If it claims to be licensed, approved, or regulated, verify that claim with the relevant regulator rather than relying on the service’s own wording. A platform’s terms can establish what the platform says about itself, but do not independently establish safety, regulatory status, reliable payment, or customer outcomes.
  4. Read the transaction conditions before submission. Make sure you understand when the code must be sent, when the quote can change, how disputes are handled, and whether any information or action is required after submission. Do not proceed if the final payout or material conditions remain unclear.
  5. Keep a complete record. Save the written quote, applicable terms, support contact, card-submission details, messages, and transaction confirmation or receipt. Keep payment evidence if the service says the transfer is complete but the naira has not arrived.

What Nigerian consumer guidance means for the exchange

The FCCPC’s consumer-rights guidance describes rights and business responsibilities that are relevant to an exchange: understandable information, disclosure of material facts including prices, transaction records on request except where impracticable, fair dealings, and timely service or updates when delay is unavoidable. Use those principles to ask for a clear net payout, fees, conditions, payment process, and written record before you complete a transaction. They are not proof that any particular exchange service is trustworthy.

Don't use search engines or shortened versions of the website address, as these may lead you to fake or fraudulent sites. Do not provide any Gift Card details (example: Card Number) to someone you do not know or trust. If you believe you've reached an illegitimate website, contact cardholder service at 1-888-524-1283. Be cautious of phishing sites, there are a variety of scams in which fraudsters try to trick others into paying with gift cards.
  • To report your Lost or Stolen Physical Visa Card, call Customer Service 24/7 at 1 (888) 524-1283 to cancel your Gift Card as soon as you can. You will be asked to provide the Gift Card number and other identifying information.
  • Use your Visa Gift Card in the U.S. everywhere Visa debit cards are accepted, including online.

The FCCPC describes the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act 2018 as Nigeria’s main statute governing consumer protection and competition, and says the Act established the FCCPC and the Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal. This does not establish a specific gift-card resale rule or certify an individual exchange provider.

Example of a provider’s terms—and what they do not prove

CardWaka’s terms of service, last updated June 1, 2026, describe it as a digital gift-card exchange operated by TRADEWOLF LIMITED. The terms state that users must be at least 18 and that the platform is intended for users in Nigeria and other supported West African countries. These are statements in the provider’s own terms. They do not independently verify safety, regulatory approval, current rates, payment reliability, or customer outcomes; check the current terms and your card’s eligibility directly before deciding whether to use any service.

If something goes wrong

  1. Preserve the quote, terms, messages, submission details, and any payment evidence. Do not delete correspondence or rely only on a verbal promise.
  2. Contact the service through the support channel you independently verified and state what was agreed, what happened, and what resolution you are seeking.
  3. If the issue remains unresolved, consult the relevant consumer-protection authority for the transaction. The FCCPC identifies itself as Nigeria’s consumer-protection commission, but a gift-card-specific complaint process was not established in the cited guidance.

Do not confuse US gift-card rules with Nigerian rules

The CFPB’s Regulation E provision on gift certificates, store gift cards, and general-use prepaid cards concerns US requirements, including disclosures, fees, and expiration. It does not establish Nigerian law or determine whether a Nigerian resident may resell a particular foreign gift card. For resale permission, rely on the specific issuer’s terms and, where needed, advice relevant to the transaction’s jurisdiction.
