Before Donald Trump’s January 20, 2025 inauguration, Steve Bannon said he would try to push Elon Musk out of the president-elect’s inner circle and deny him privileged White House access. The immediate flashpoint was Musk’s support for the H-1B visa program. Bannon’s threat was not proof that he had authority over White House credentials, and Musk was seated close to Trump at the inauguration.
What did Bannon say?
In an interview with Italy’s Corriere della Sera, Bannon said he would get Musk kicked out before the inauguration. Vanity Fair rendered his remarks in English as: “I will get Elon Musk kicked out by the time he’s inaugurated.” It also quoted Bannon saying Musk would not have a “blue pass with full access to the White House” and would be “like everyone else.” The Independent published a similar English translation.
Vanity Fair also quoted Bannon’s personal attack: “He is a truly evil guy, a very bad guy. I made it my personal thing to take this guy down.” These are translated quotations published by those outlets, not an independently verified transcript of the Italian interview.
Why were Bannon and Musk fighting?
The immediate dispute was over H-1B visas, which U.S. employers use to hire workers in specialty occupations. Musk defended the program while calling for major reform. Bannon opposed its use by technology companies, arguing that it benefited employers at the expense of U.S. workers.

The argument was also about influence: whether Musk, a major supporter of Trump’s campaign, should have a powerful role in shaping the incoming administration and the broader MAGA coalition. The visa disagreement became a public expression of that larger contest.
Did Bannon succeed in keeping Musk away from Trump?
Musk attended Trump’s January 20, 2025 inauguration and sat in the row closest to Trump inside the Capitol Rotunda, according to the Associated Press. That visible proximity contrasts with Bannon’s prediction that Musk would be pushed out of Trump’s orbit.

It does not establish whether Musk received the particular “blue pass” Bannon described, or what access credentials Musk held. The available reporting does not verify the rules for that credential or whether one was issued to him. Bannon’s stated intention should not be confused with formal authority to grant or revoke White House access.

In remarks later in Trump’s first 100 days, Bannon gave Musk credit for earning a seat at the table through his campaign support, while arguing against giving him a leading role. The Independent quoted Bannon at a Politico event: “I’ve always argued it can’t be at the head of the table, and that table shouldn’t be the Cabinet Room in the West Wing.”

That position was more qualified than the pre-inauguration threat: Bannon acknowledged Musk’s place in Trump’s circle while opposing the degree of influence he should have.
