Choose native staking if you want SOL delegated through a stake account without receiving a pool token; choose liquid staking if you value a transferable receipt token and accept its added pool, market and possibly DeFi risks. Marinade Native, mSOL and JitoSOL illustrate different routes, while Sanctum supports a range of LSTs with terms that can vary. There is no reliable platform winner based on yield alone: rewards change, and published estimates may not use comparable periods or fee methods.
What is the difference between native and liquid staking?
With native staking, you delegate SOL in a stake account to a validator. The account earns staking rewards according to network conditions and validator performance. Activating or deactivating stake is not immediate: the protocol processes those state changes at epoch boundaries. Solana describes an epoch as approximately two days, but its exact duration varies. See Solana’s staking documentation.
With liquid staking, you deposit SOL into a stake pool and receive a liquid staking token (LST) representing a share of the pool. An LST can be transferable and may be usable in DeFi. Its token count may stay the same while the amount of SOL it represents grows as rewards accrue. That does not guarantee you can sell or redeem it immediately for that amount of SOL: market liquidity, price impact and pool redemption terms matter. See Sanctum’s explanation of LSTs and the Marinade FAQ.
| Feature | Native staking | Liquid staking |
|---|---|---|
| What you hold | A stake account containing delegated SOL | An LST representing a share of a pool |
| How you exit | Deactivate stake and wait for protocol epoch processing, or use a service that offers another route | Redeem through the pool, obtain an instant-exit quote where available, or sell the LST on a market |
| Additional considerations | Validator performance, commission and operating arrangements | All relevant staking and validator factors, plus pool-program, authority, liquidity, token-price and any DeFi-integration risks |

| Option | Route and control | Fees stated in cited documentation | Exit and utility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Marinade Native | Uses native stake accounts, not an mSOL-issuing stake pool. Marinade says the user retains withdraw authority while Marinade has delegation authority; its documentation notes that non-custodial does not mean no program is involved. Marinade Native documentation | Marinade states no deposit or ongoing management fee. It lists a flat 0.003 SOL service fee for delayed unstaking. These are documentation claims accessed October 8, 2026; check current terms before acting. Marinade Native documentation | Delayed unstaking follows the epoch-based flow; instant unstaking uses a market-maker quote whose value varies with liquidity. Native does not issue mSOL. Marinade FAQ |
| Marinade mSOL | Liquid staking: users receive mSOL for their pool share. Marinade says mSOL can be used in DeFi. Marinade FAQ | Not stated in the cited FAQ; check the current product terms. | Marinade describes both instant unstaking via a market-maker quote and delayed epoch-based unstaking. A quote depends on available liquidity. Marinade FAQ |
| JitoSOL | Jito says it uses the Solana Labs stake-pool program and describes the pool as non-custodial. StakeNet selects validators; Jito DAO has limited management responsibilities related to validator selection and fees. JitoSOL security overview | Not stated in the cited security overview or delegation-criteria page; check current JitoSOL terms. | Jito publishes validator-selection rules covering factors such as commission, voting performance, concentration and operational criteria. These rules describe the selection process, not a guarantee of superior returns. Jito delegation criteria |
| Sanctum LSTs | Sanctum documentation describes LSTs using a fork of the Solana Labs stake-pool program. It lists an 11-member multisig with upgrade authority and Sanctum day-to-day management authority, subject to constraints. Terms may differ by LST. Sanctum LST documentation | The documentation lists default fees of 10 basis points (0.1%) on withdrawals and a 10% epoch fee split between operators and Sanctum. These are defaults stated in documentation accessed October 8, 2026, not a guarantee for every LST or a substitute for checking its current terms. Sanctum LST documentation | Redemption and market liquidity depend on the particular LST and its routes. Check its terms and a live quote rather than assuming all Sanctum LSTs exit the same way. Which platform has the highest yield?
The available documentation does not establish a current, apples-to-apples yield ranking across these options. A quoted APY is useful only if its time window, methodology, fees and included rewards are comparable. Validator commission and performance also affect results, and an LST’s value or market price can introduce differences that a headline rate may not show.
Solana lists an initial inflation rate of 8%, year-over-year dis-inflation of 15% and a long-term inflation rate of 1.5% in its staking documentation accessed in 2026. Those are network inflation-schedule parameters, not a staking APY or a promise of what an individual delegator will earn. Solana says rewards depend on inflation, the amount of SOL staked across the network, and validator uptime and commission; rewards are generally tallied and issued once per epoch. Compare net results over the same period and account for every relevant cost: protocol or service fees, withdrawal costs, transaction fees, swap spreads and price impact. For LSTs, also distinguish the token’s value relative to SOL from a displayed yield estimate.
How long does it take to unstake SOL?
For native stake, deactivation is governed by epoch boundaries rather than an instant withdrawal button. Solana describes epochs as approximately two days, with timing that varies; the exact wait can therefore depend on when deactivation is requested and protocol conditions. Solana staking documentation

Liquid-staking exits are route-dependent. A delayed redemption may use the epoch-based process; an instant route or market sale depends on available liquidity and may return less than the nominal SOL value. Marinade, for example, describes instant unstaking through a market-maker quote and delayed unstaking through the standard epoch-based flow. Review the actual quote and fees before confirming. - Route and asset: Confirm whether you are delegating through a stake account or receiving an LST, and understand what you will hold after the transaction.
- Authority and control: Find out who holds withdrawal, delegation, upgrade and management authority. “Non-custodial” alone does not describe every power or program dependency.
- Validator selection: Review uptime or voting performance, commission, concentration and operating criteria. The Solana Foundation’s delegation criteria are an example of factors to examine, not a universal quality guarantee. Solana Foundation delegation criteria
- All-in cost: Check deposit, management, epoch, withdrawal and transaction fees, plus any swap spread or price impact on the exit route.
- Exit path: Identify whether you can wait for epoch-based deactivation, redeem directly, accept an instant quote or sell on a market. Check the live route available to you.
- Extra exposure: If you plan to use an LST in DeFi, account for the additional protocol and market risks rather than treating that use as part of staking itself.
- Yield method: Compare only estimates using the same dates, reward inclusions and net-of-fee basis; otherwise, a higher displayed number may not mean a better outcome.
Published validator rules, fee schedules, authorities and liquidity can change. The platform links above describe the cited documentation as accessed October 8, 2026; use the current terms and transaction quote for the specific asset and route you intend to use.
