Southwest’s 27 Boeing 737 MAX 7s were aircraft contractually due in 2024 that the airline had not received by January 2025; it carried them into its 2025 commitments. The number did not mean 27 completed planes were physically waiting for delivery. Certification is no longer pending: the FAA issued an amended type certificate on August 3, 2026, but that announcement did not confirm a completed Southwest delivery or service-entry date.
What Southwest’s 27-aircraft figure means
In its January 30, 2025 year-end results, Southwest reported 63 aircraft contractually scheduled for delivery in 2024 that it had not received: 27 737-7s and 36 737-8s. The company included those aircraft in its 2025 contractual commitments. The 27 figure is a schedule carryover, not proof that 27 finished MAX 7s had been built and were waiting at Boeing for Southwest.
Southwest’s September 26, 2024 order book had listed 27 firm 737-7 orders among 85 total MAX aircraft contractually scheduled for 2024. The company cautioned that the order book did not reflect delivery delays and could change. Its later year-end report documented the undelivered aircraft. Contractual commitments were not the delivery forecast
Southwest’s 2025 contractual order-book table listed 136 aircraft: 70 737-7s and 66 737-8s. That total combined the 63 aircraft carried over from 2024 with 73 aircraft otherwise contracted for 2025. It was a contractual schedule, not a forecast that Southwest would actually take all 136 during the year.

The airline’s stated 2025 planning assumption was instead to receive 38 737-8s while Boeing ramped production and worked toward 737-7 certification. Those were two different measures: the contract schedule described commitments, while the 38-aircraft figure described Southwest’s planning assumption for 737-8 deliveries. Southwest received 22 737-8s in 2024, according to its 2024 Form 10-K. Southwest’s 2024 Form 10-K
Why the aircraft were delayed
Southwest attributed MAX delivery delays to manufacturing and labor challenges, as well as delayed FAA certification of the 737-7. Its first-quarter 2025 filing also cited the September–November 2024 work stoppage among the factors. The airline said it conservatively replanned its capacity and delivery expectations for 2025.

On August 3, 2026, the FAA announced that it had issued an amended type certificate and updated Production Limitation Record for the 737 MAX 7, following review, testing, design changes and additional analysis. This ended the certification-pending status described in earlier filings.

Boeing said it and Southwest were preparing the first aircraft for delivery, including final-configuration updates. The FAA’s certification and Boeing’s preparation announcement do not, by themselves, establish that Southwest had taken delivery or put the aircraft into revenue service. Boeing reported more than 1,000 hours of flight and ground testing in the certification program; that figure is Boeing’s, not an independent count. What Southwest’s 2026 filing does—and does not—show
In its July 23, 2026 filing, Southwest said 81 aircraft contractually due in 2024 and 2025 remained undelivered as of the filing’s reporting period and were included in 2026 commitments: 27 737-7s and 54 737-8s. That is a dated status report. Because it predates the FAA’s August certification and does not report subsequent deliveries, it cannot establish how many aircraft remained undelivered after certification or the date Southwest received its first MAX 7.
