Southwest Airlines halted pilot hiring classes in March 2024 as it planned to reduce capacity, particularly in the second half of the year, amid uncertainty about Boeing aircraft deliveries. Contemporary reporting put the airline’s planned 2024 pilot hiring at about 350, down from 1,916 in 2023. That 2024 figure was a reported estimate, not a precise annual target stated in Southwest’s filing.
What Southwest announced in March 2024
In a March 12, 2024 filing, Southwest said it had “halted hiring classes for multiple workgroups, including Pilots and Flight Attendants.” The company connected the pause to planned capacity reductions and schedule adjustments, with the cuts expected to be especially relevant in the second half of 2024. Southwest also said its delivery schedule was fluid.
The filing confirms a pause in hiring classes; it does not state that all pilot recruiting stopped indefinitely. Nor does it give a precise annual pilot hiring target. The approximately 350 figure came from a contemporaneous Travel Weekly report, which attributed the estimate to Future & Active Pilot Advisors.
How the reported hiring figures compare
| Year | Reported Southwest pilot hires or plan | Attribution and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 2022 | 1,140 hires | Future & Active Pilot Advisors figures, as reported by Travel Weekly in 2024. |
| 2023 | 1,916 hires | Future & Active Pilot Advisors figures, as reported by Travel Weekly in 2024. |
| 2024 | Approximately 350 planned hires | Travel Weekly’s 2024 report; this was a reported estimate, not a precise target in Southwest’s filing. |
The reported 2024 plan was a sharp reduction from the prior two years’ reported hiring totals. The figures are not all the same kind of measure: 2022 and 2023 are reported counts, while the 2024 number is an approximate plan.

Why aircraft deliveries affected staffing
Southwest’s March filing said Boeing had reduced its expected 2024 deliveries of the 737-8 from 58 aircraft to 46. The earlier expectation was 79 total 737 MAX deliveries, including those 58 737-8s. Southwest’s revised assumption included no 737-7 deliveries in 2024.
Those figures matter because aircraft deliveries influence how quickly an airline can add capacity and put crews to work. Southwest said it would reduce capacity and re-optimize schedules in response to the delivery uncertainty. The 46 figure refers specifically to expected 737-8 deliveries, not to all MAX aircraft or to the reduction from the earlier total of 79.

What Southwest said later about pilot staffing
In September 2024 investor-day materials, Southwest described pilot overstaffing as a consequence of Boeing delivery delays and discussed efficiency measures, including 24-hour flying. The company characterized one initiative as intended to “address the pilot overstaffing caused by the Boeing delivery delays.” This is Southwest’s own description of its staffing situation, rather than an independent assessment.
Travel Weekly also reported that Southwest’s longer-term business plan called for low-to-mid-single-digit capacity growth beyond 2024. That was the plan reported at the time; it does not establish subsequent hiring levels or prove that the projected growth occurred.

Workforce and labor context
Southwest’s 2023 Form 10-K reported 10,746 pilots at December 31, 2023. That is a year-end workforce count, not a 2024 hiring target. The annual report also noted that pilots ratified a new agreement in January 2024. The cited company materials do not say that the agreement caused the hiring change.

The 2024 pause and reported hiring plan describe Southwest’s staffing decisions in response to its capacity and aircraft-delivery outlook at that time. They should not be read as a permanent hiring freeze or as a current forecast. Anyone assessing a pilot career opportunity should distinguish a pause in hiring classes from an airline’s longer-term staffing needs and check for current openings directly with the airline.
