Steam did not report that it earned $4.3 billion in 2017. That figure was a third-party estimate by SteamSpy creator Sergey Galyonkin, presented at GDC 2018 and reported by Game Developer. The same presentation estimated that the top 100 games generated about half of Steam’s game revenue that year. Both figures are historical estimates, not audited Valve accounts.
What did Steam make in 2017?
Galyonkin estimated that Steam generated $4.3 billion in game revenue in 2017. Game Developer reported the estimate after his GDC 2018 presentation. It was not an official Valve financial disclosure, and it should not be described as Valve’s net income, Valve’s share of sales, or a verified gross-revenue total. Game Developer’s report attributes the figure to SteamSpy and Galyonkin.
The estimate covered game sales and, as reported at the time, excluded downloadable content and in-game purchases. It therefore does not have the same scope as Valve’s own year-end seller rankings.
How much of that estimate came from the top 100 games?
Game Developer reported Galyonkin’s estimate that the top 100 games accounted for about 50% of Steam’s 2017 game revenue. The presentation also put the store’s catalog at 21,406 games, making those 100 titles roughly 0.5% of the listed games. These are reported estimates, not independently audited market shares.

Galyonkin characterized the pattern this way: “Half of all the money is made by a small subset of games.” The statement referred to the distribution estimated by SteamSpy, rather than a Valve-published revenue breakdown.
PUBG was a major outlier
Galyonkin was reported as estimating that PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) sold close to 28 million copies and generated $600 million in revenue. Compared with the $4.3 billion SteamSpy estimate, $600 million is roughly 14%. That percentage is arithmetic based on the two attributed estimates; it is not a separately reported audited share.

What Valve’s official 2017 list does—and does not—confirm
Valve’s January 2018 “Best of 2017” retrospective ranked the 100 highest-performing games in four tiers: Platinum covered ranks 1–12, Gold 13–24, Silver 25–40, and Bronze 41–100. Valve did not publish exact revenue figures for individual games or the total represented by the list.
Valve’s ranking counted game sales, in-game transactions, and downloadable content. Because that is broader than the SteamSpy figure as reported in 2018, the tier list cannot be treated as independent confirmation of the $4.3 billion estimate or the top-100 share. It provides relative rankings, not a matching financial account.

These names illustrate the range of top-ranked titles; the list does not reveal how much any one of them earned. Game Developer’s coverage of the rankings reports the examples.
Why SteamSpy’s number was an estimate
SteamSpy inferred game ownership from sampled Steam user profiles rather than counting completed purchases. Game Developer reported that the service sampled around 800,000 profiles per day and used a three-day sample via Steam’s API. Galyonkin reportedly cautioned that the data were not real-time and could take several days to catch up.

- Profile ownership did not establish whether a copy was purchased on Steam, acquired elsewhere, or obtained for free.
- The method did not account for refunds, so ownership estimates were not equivalent to net completed sales.
- SteamSpy was particularly inaccurate for small games; its broad estimates should not be read as precise title-level accounting.
Those limitations matter when interpreting both the platform-wide total and the concentration estimate: the figures describe a model built from sampled ownership data, not Valve’s transaction ledger.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the figures can tell you today
The 2017 figures support a historical conclusion: according to SteamSpy’s estimate, revenue was concentrated among a relatively small group of games, with PUBG an unusually large contributor. They do not establish how Steam revenue is distributed now. The figures refer to 2017, and Valve’s separate retrospective used broader revenue categories without publishing comparable dollar totals.
