The conversation also follows how he sought early driver interest, assembled a team, and approached pricing and growth. Those are Sear’s descriptions of the model, not an independent audit of Empower’s operations or driver earnings.
How did Empower get started?
Sear says the idea grew out of conversations with rideshare drivers. Before the product was fully built, he went to an airport parking area to approach drivers and see whether they were interested in an alternative platform. That early customer discovery put drivers—not just riders—at the center of the company’s starting point.
The interview also covers Sear’s move from legal work into entrepreneurship and his effort to build a team with relevant industry experience. In the story he tells, finding drivers, recruiting knowledgeable teammates, deciding how to price the service, and expanding into markets are connected startup challenges.
How does Sear describe Empower’s model?
Sear describes Empower as a platform whose customers are drivers. In his account, drivers choose their own ride rates and receive the full ride fare, while Empower charges drivers a subscription rather than taking a share of each fare. The interview presents the company’s intended model as Sear explains it; it does not verify how much drivers earn or establish that every ride or market operates identically.

That distinction changes the way the business is framed: instead of emphasizing a platform’s share of each transaction, Sear describes recurring subscription revenue from drivers. The arrangement also makes driver-set pricing a central part of Empower’s pitch, as presented in the interview.
What did Sear report about Empower’s early scale?
In a 2022 interview republication, Sear reported that Empower had nearly $2.5 million in gross bookings and 140,000 rides in the DC metro area in May 2022, with more than 25,000 riders there that month. These are historical figures reported by the founder, not independently verified metrics or a picture of the company today.

What does the interview reveal about building the business?
The conversation treats growth as more than a software launch. Sear’s account links testing driver demand before the product was complete with the later work of setting prices, recruiting people with industry knowledge, and deciding how to expand. His reported early metrics offer a snapshot of claimed activity in one region and one month, but the interview does not establish current markets, prices, or operating results.
Sear also reflects on skepticism that can accompany progress: “The more success you have, the more doubt people will have.” It is a concise expression of the uncertainty entrepreneurs face as they try to turn early interest into a durable business.

The episode page is titled “Disrupting the Rideshare Industry with Joshua Sear of Empower.” Its displayed date differs from dates shown in podcast listings, and the sources do not explain the discrepancy. It is therefore safest to identify it as the Startup Savants interview without asserting a definitive original release date.
