A 2020 Congressional Research Service report said a planned SpaceX tourist trip to the International Space Station (ISS) was reportedly priced at $55 million for the single trip. The plan called for a 10-day mission—not a three-day jaunt—and the report does not establish that the trip flew as planned or that the price was paid.
What did the reported $55 million cover?
In its 2020 report The Future of Space Tourism, the Congressional Research Service (CRS) described a plan SpaceX announced in March 2020 to fly three tourists to the ISS on a 10-day trip in 2021. CRS wrote: “The price of the single trip is reportedly $55 million.” Read the CRS report.
That wording matters for a personal-finance question: CRS reported a price for the planned trip as a whole. It does not say that $55 million was a confirmed price per passenger, a retail fare available to consumers, or an amount ultimately paid. The report is a historical account of a plan, not a current quote.
Is $55 million a current SpaceX fare?
No current consumer fare is established by the sources available here. SpaceX describes Dragon as capable of carrying commercial astronauts to Earth orbit, the ISS, or beyond, but its Dragon vehicle information does not publish a retail ticket price.

Private astronaut missions are an active category: NASA documents visits to the ISS in 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025 and has selected providers for additional missions. That confirms mission activity, not that SpaceX is selling seats directly to the public or that a seat is available at the historical reported price. See NASA’s private astronaut missions page, last updated August 31, 2026.

No. The itinerary in CRS’s 2020 account was a planned 10-day ISS trip. The three-to-five-day duration comes from a different mission profile: in a May 12, 2026 update, SpaceX described a Dragon mission during which the crew plans to observe Earth’s polar regions. That update does not connect the mission to the historical $55 million figure. SpaceX’s reusability update.

Actual ISS mission stays also vary. NASA lists eight days for Axiom Mission 2, 17 days for Axiom Mission 1, and 18 days for Axiom Missions 3 and 4. These are mission durations, not prices, and they should not be treated as the itinerary for the planned 2020 SpaceX trip.

What should a prospective buyer take from the headline?
- Price: $55 million was reported in 2020 for the single planned trip; it is not a verified current fare or confirmed per-person price.
- Duration: The plan CRS summarized was for 10 days. SpaceX’s later three-to-five-day polar-orbit profile describes a separate mission.
- Availability: NASA’s records show private astronaut flights have taken place, but the cited sources do not establish current public seat inventory or a price a consumer can book.
- Comparison: Before comparing spaceflight prices, distinguish an orbital ISS mission from a suborbital experience, and check whether a quoted amount is a published fare or a reported estimate. The sources here do not provide a current, like-for-like price list.
