For a legal change, Southwest’s customer process accepts supporting documents and can update up to five upcoming reservations associated with the account. If departure is within the next few days, bring relevant documents to the airport and speak with a Customer Service Agent.
First identify which kind of name change you need
Southwest’s rules depend on whether you are correcting a record for the same traveler, updating that traveler’s legal name, or trying to substitute another passenger. These are different requests with different rules.
- Minor typo or formatting issue: Contact Southwest or the travel agent that issued the ticket and describe the exact discrepancy.
- Legal name change: Use Southwest’s customer-facing name-change process and provide documentation.
- Different passenger: Treat this as a ticket-transfer question; a correction does not make a ticket transferable.
Correcting a typo or formatting issue
Southwest’s Global Distribution System Policy allows one minor name correction per ticketed passenger for specified cases. The policy is written for ticket agents and approved distribution providers, not as a general self-service permission for customers. Contact Southwest or your issuing travel agent rather than assuming you can edit the ticket yourself. (Southwest Global Distribution System Policy)
The agent-facing policy lists these cases:
- Inverted first and last names.
- Adding or removing a middle name or initial.
- Adding or removing a hyphenated last name.
- Adding or removing repeated characters.
- Correcting a first-name typo of no more than three characters.
- Adding or removing a prefix or suffix.
The policy says the correction is limited to one per ticketed passenger and requires “NAMECORRECT” in the endorsement field. It does not establish a general right to change the traveler’s identity, date of birth, or gender; it specifically disallows gender or date-of-birth changes in Secure Flight details. Southwest’s Rapid Rewards support page says typos and adding a middle name may be handled by phone, while its legal name-change request page is for changes supported by legal documentation. Changing your name after marriage, divorce or a legal change
Southwest says it will process a name change to an account or upcoming reservation based on legal documentation. Its examples of supporting records include old and new driver licenses, identification cards or passports; marriage licenses; divorce decrees; and legal name-change documentation. The customer page says Southwest can update up to five upcoming reservations associated with the account. Start with the current Southwest Name Change Request process and follow its instructions for submitting documents.
Rapid Rewards account details are a separate matter from a ticketed reservation. The program requires a member’s legal name to match government-issued photo identification; updating a loyalty account alone does not establish a right to change who is traveling. If your flight is in the next few days
Southwest’s troubleshooting guidance directs travelers whose departure is within the next few days to bring relevant documentation to the airport and speak with a Customer Service Agent. Examples include a marriage certificate, divorce decree, or old and new government-issued identification. Do not rely on an online form as your only route when time is short. Southwest identifies misspellings, using a preferred name instead of a legal first name, middle-name mismatches, and formatting differences as possible reasons that a name may not match travel documents or interfere with document scanning or Touchless ID.

Can you give your ticket to someone else?
Generally, no. Southwest’s Contract of Carriage states that tickets are nontransferable unless the ticket explicitly provides otherwise or a relevant corporate agreement permits an exchange for a different passenger under its terms. The stated corporate-agreement exception includes a request made at least 24 hours before scheduled departure. Check your ticket and ask Southwest or your corporate travel manager whether such an exception applies. (Southwest Contract of Carriage)
A typo correction or legal name update for the original traveler is not permission to resell or give away the ticket. Separate fare rules for changing or canceling a booking do not make it transferable; consult Southwest’s Fare Information and Rules if you need to consider cancellation or rebooking.

Will Southwest charge a name-change fee?
Southwest’s customer name-change page does not state a universal fixed name-change fee. It warns that reservations booked or changed on or after May 28, 2025—including passenger-name changes—may be subject to checked-baggage fees and current fare rules. That is a conditional warning, not a statement that every name update incurs a fee. Check the terms for your specific reservation with Southwest before making a change.
