Villa d’Autore, a historic estate on Rome’s Via Appia Antica, has been reported at $26 million—but that is not an established current asking price. A September 2026 report says the brokerage listing shows “price on request,” while press estimates cited by the outlet put the figure at €15 million to €20 million. The available reports do not confirm a single current price or a completed sale.
What is for sale, and what is the reported price?
The property is Villa d’Autore, on Via Appia Antica a few miles from the Colosseum, according to Mansion Global. Mansion Global reported an offering price of $26 million. However, Immobiliare.it reported on September 23, 2026, that Italy Sotheby’s International Realty was handling the sale confidentially, its website displayed “price on request,” and press reports estimated €15 million to €20 million. Those figures are not interchangeable: the sources do not establish a verified live asking price, and the euro estimate is not an official conversion of the $26 million report.
The property was reported on the market from September 2026 by Idealista. The sources cited here do not establish whether it remains available now or whether a sale has closed.
How Sophia Loren and Carlo Ponti are connected to the villa
Carlo Ponti, the film producer and Loren’s husband, owned and renovated the villa. Mansion Global reports that the current sellers bought it from Ponti in 1985. The connection is more nuanced than the headline shorthand suggests: Idealista describes Loren’s link as historical and symbolic, and says Ponti lived at the property with his first family before marrying her. The available accounts do not establish that the villa was Loren’s residence during her marriage to Ponti.

What the estate includes
Descriptions differ across property reports, particularly on area and on whether figures refer to the main residence, additional buildings, or the grounds. They should not be collapsed into one definitive measurement.
| Source | Reported details |
|---|---|
| Mansion Global | 24-acre estate; main villa of more than 8,600 square feet across two levels; five en-suite bedrooms; library, winter garden, staff room, and elevator to a roof terrace. It also reports a 7,500-square-foot additional residence, swimming pool, garage, gardener’s annex, and more than 150,000 square feet of landscaped gardens. |
| Immobiliare.it | Main residence of about 700 square meters; five bedrooms and five bathrooms upstairs; seven bathrooms overall; private park of about 11,000 square meters; and former stables converted into an events space of about 467 square meters. |
| Idealista | Main villa of roughly 700 square meters and park of about 11,000 square meters. |
The accounts share a picture of a substantial main home and a separate former-stables building, alongside landscaped grounds and a pool. The measurements remain source-reported descriptions, not a single reconciled survey.

Historic details and renovation considerations
Recent coverage highlights a dining room set inside an ancient Roman cave, with tuff-block walls and a floor mosaic depicting Medusa. The house is described as a 19th-century building over an ancient basalt quarry, with design attributed to Andrea Busiri Vici by Immobiliare.it. A library and winter garden are also reported features.
Idealista places the estate within the Appia Antica Regional Park and reports that heritage and landscape restrictions apply to properties there. It says renovations, extensions, and exterior changes require relevant authorisations. That is secondary real-estate reporting, not a property-specific legal determination; anyone considering work would need to confirm requirements with the competent authorities.

What a buyer can—and cannot—infer from the coverage
The reports establish a notable property, a reported historical connection to Ponti and Loren, and differing descriptions of its scale. They do not establish a confirmed current price, a completed transaction, or a definitive set of measured areas. The $26 million figure is a reported offer price from Mansion Global; the later euro range is described as a press estimate, while the brokerage price is reported as available on request.
For a serious buyer, the practical next step is to obtain current sale terms and property documentation directly through the reported brokerage, then verify title, boundaries, measured areas, condition, and any restrictions with appropriate local professionals. The published figures alone are not a substitute for those checks.
