On August 7, 2024, Sony also raised its full-year G&NS sales forecast from ¥4.20 trillion to ¥4.32 trillion and its operating-income forecast from ¥310 billion to ¥320 billion. The quarterly sales increase did not mean PS5 hardware sales rose: Sony said hardware unit sales decreased.
What Sony’s “gaming Q1” figure covers
The quarter ran from April 1 through June 30, 2024, the first quarter of Sony’s fiscal year 2024. Sony reported the results on August 7, 2024. “Gaming” here refers to Sony’s Game & Network Services segment, which includes PlayStation hardware, games and network services—not Sony Group’s consolidated sales. The 12% figure is year-over-year segment sales growth, not a rise in console unit sales. Sony’s Q1 results summary and its SEC-filed earnings presentation provide the reported figures.
Why G&NS sales rose 12%
G&NS sales were ¥864.9 billion, compared with ¥771.9 billion in the same quarter a year earlier: a ¥93.0 billion increase. Sony described the increase as significant and cited several contributing factors:
- Foreign-exchange effects added ¥85.5 billion to sales, according to Sony.
- Sales of first-party game software increased.
- Network-services sales increased, mainly from PlayStation Plus.
- Hardware sales decreased because hardware unit sales fell.
The ¥85.5 billion currency impact is one factor in Sony’s explanation, not a complete accounting of the ¥93.0 billion net increase. Sony’s presentation does not quantify the other listed sales factors in the same bridge.

Sales growth and profit growth are different measures
G&NS operating income was ¥75.9 billion, up ¥16.0 billion, or 33%, from the prior-year quarter. Sony also reported adjusted OIBDA of ¥95.7 billion, an increase of ¥19.8 billion, or 26%. Adjusted OIBDA is a non-IFRS measure, so it should not be treated as interchangeable with operating income.
Sony cited increased software and network-services sales as positive factors for operating income and adjusted OIBDA. Higher costs were a negative factor for adjusted OIBDA. Separately, Sony identified increased unit sales of PS5 peripherals as a positive adjusted-OIBDA factor; that does not change its statement that hardware sales declined because console unit sales decreased. These explanations are Sony’s reported attributions, not an independent test of what caused the changes.

How Sony revised its FY2024 forecast
In August 2024, Sony raised its fiscal-year G&NS sales and operating-income forecasts relative to the guidance it had issued in May:
| G&NS measure | May 2024 forecast | August 2024 forecast | Revision |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sales | ¥4.20 trillion | ¥4.32 trillion | Up ¥120 billion, about 3% |
| Operating income | ¥310 billion | ¥320 billion | Up ¥10 billion, about 3% |
Sony attributed the sales-forecast increase to foreign exchange. For operating income, it cited improved network-services profitability, mainly PlayStation Plus, as a positive factor. The forecasts were guidance available in August 2024, not reported full-year results.

What happened to the forecast by year-end?
Sony later reported FY2024 G&NS sales of ¥4,670.0 billion, above the August 2024 forecast of ¥4.32 trillion. That annual result was reported after the August outlook and should not be confused with what Sony knew when it raised its projection. Sony’s FY2024 results filing gives the eventual figure.

Sony’s Q&A summary said growth in monthly active users (MAU) was aided by expansion of the PS5 install base, franchise software and third-party free-to-play titles. This is context about user activity, not a quantified explanation of the quarter’s sales increase. Sony labels the document an English summary of a Japanese Q&A session and says it is not intended as a direct translation. Sony’s Q&A summary contains that discussion.
