Sony’s latest PS5 price increase took effect April 2, 2026, raising recommended prices for PS5, PS5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal. In the U.S., the new recommended prices are $649.99 for PS5, $599.99 for PS5 Digital Edition, and $899.99 for PS5 Pro. Sony cited broad global economic pressures, not tariffs specifically, for this latest increase.

What are the new PS5 prices?

Sony’s recommended retail prices (RRPs) below took effect April 2, 2026. They are suggested prices, not a guarantee of what a retailer charges or whether a model is in stock. Sony provided these prices for the U.S., U.K., Europe, and Japan; for other territories, it directs customers to local retailers or PlayStation Direct where available. Sony’s March 27, 2026 announcement lists the current prices.

Product U.S. U.K. Europe Japan
PS5 $649.99 £569.99 €649.99 ¥97,980
PS5 Digital Edition $599.99 £519.99 €599.99 ¥89,980
PS5 Pro $899.99 £789.99 €899.99 ¥137,980
PlayStation Portal $249.99 £219.99 €249.99 ¥39,980

These are Sony’s RRPs by market, not currency conversions. Check local listings for the actual checkout price, stock, and any promotion before budgeting for a purchase.

Did Sony say tariffs caused the 2026 increase?

No. In its March 27, 2026 announcement, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s vice president of global marketing, Isabelle Tomatis, said the company acted “with continued pressures in the global economic landscape.” The announcement does not identify tariffs as the specific cause or provide a breakdown of what drove the increase.

Tariffs are relevant to the earlier U.S. price rise in August 2025, but that is a separate event. Sony described a “challenging economic environment” in its announcement at the time; the company did not name tariffs as the direct reason. The Associated Press reported that Sony was diversifying its supply chain to alleviate U.S. tariff impacts. That context does not establish tariffs as the cause of the later global increase. Sony’s August 2025 U.S. announcement and Associated Press coverage describe that earlier episode.

How the PS5 price changes unfolded

The sequence matters: Sony made selective regional adjustments in April 2025, a U.S. console increase in August 2025, and then a global increase covering consoles and Portal in April 2026. These announcements should not be treated as one tariff-driven change.

How to use the new prices when budgeting

  • Compare the model you actually want. The Digital Edition has no disc drive; the listed RRP is lower than the standard PS5 in each market in Sony’s table. Consider whether physical games or discs you already own matter to your choice.
  • Separate RRP from street price. Sony’s announcement does not report retailer discounts, stock, or local checkout prices. Check those directly before deciding whether to buy now or wait.
  • Budget for the full purchase. The table gives console and Portal RRPs, not a complete estimate of a gaming setup. Additional games or accessories may add to the total.
  • Do not assume a tariff surcharge from the headline. Sony has not published a tariff-specific explanation or tariff pass-through figure for the 2026 increase.
