Sony Interactive Entertainment confirmed in February 2026 that it will close Bluepoint Games, the Austin-based PlayStation studio known for remaking Demon’s Souls and Shadow of the Colossus. The closure was expected to take effect the following month. Game Developer reported that 70 employees faced layoffs, attributing that figure to Bloomberg.

What happened to Bluepoint Games?

Sony said the closure followed a recent business review, according to Game Developer’s February 19, 2026 report. Sony described Bluepoint as a talented team and thanked its employees. The statement did not give a more detailed, studio-specific reason for the decision.

Bluepoint was a Sony-owned PlayStation studio based in Austin, Texas. Sony announced its agreement to acquire the studio in 2021, noting that Bluepoint had worked with Sony for more than 15 years and would join PlayStation Studios. Sony said Bluepoint was established in 2006 and had a team of 70 at the time of that announcement; that historical staffing figure is separate from the 70 employees Game Developer reported as facing layoffs in 2026.

Why is Sony closing Bluepoint?

The explanation Sony publicly gave for Bluepoint’s closure was that it followed a recent business review. The statement reported by Game Developer did not identify a specific financial, strategic, or performance cause, so claims about a more precise reason are not established by that account.

In an October 29, 2024 company-published message about decisions involving Neon Koi and Firewalk Studios, Hermen Hulst, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Studio Business Group, said Sony regularly evaluates its games portfolio and projects against near- and long-term business priorities. That provides general context about Sony’s review process, but Hulst’s message was not an explanation of Bluepoint’s later closure. Sony’s October 2024 message

What games did Bluepoint make?

Bluepoint built its reputation on remakes and remasters, including work on Shadow of the Colossus and the PS5 remake of Demon’s Souls. It also co-developed God of War Ragnarök, according to Game Developer’s closure report.

Sony called Demon’s Souls a critically acclaimed PS5 launch title in its 2021 acquisition announcement. Sony reported more than 1.4 million copies sold as of September 19, 2021; its FY2025 supplemental information lists 1.4 million global sell-through units as of that same date. These are dated figures, not a current sales total.

Sony’s 2021 Bluepoint acquisition announcement describes the studio’s PlayStation work. Sony Group’s FY2025 fourth-quarter supplemental information lists Demon’s Souls as a PS5 title released in the United States on November 12, 2020, and records its global sell-through figure as of September 19, 2021.
