If your Social Security payment is missing, the next step depends on how it was due to arrive. For a scheduled direct deposit that has not appeared, contact your bank or financial institution first. If it remains missing—or if a paper check is late, missing, or stolen—report it to the Social Security Administration (SSA) at 1-800-772-1213 or through a local Social Security office. SSA says it will review the case and replace the payment if it is due, but its public guidance does not give a fixed replacement timeline.
What to do when your Social Security payment is missing
- Check how the payment was supposed to arrive. The bank-first instruction applies to electronic payments. A late or missing paper check should be reported to SSA.
- If you expected a direct deposit, contact your bank or financial institution. Ask whether the payment was received but is delayed in posting. This is SSA’s first recommended step for an electronic payment missing on its scheduled pay date. SSA: How do I report a missing payment?
- If the electronic payment still has not appeared, contact SSA. Call 1-800-772-1213; TTY users can call 1-800-325-0778. You can also contact a local Social Security office. Explain that the payment is late or missing and ask SSA to review it.
- For a paper check, report the problem directly to SSA. Tell the agency whether your individual check did not arrive, was stolen, or is part of a broader local pattern of missing checks.
- Follow up through SSA’s official channels. SSA says it will review the case and replace the payment if it is due. Its FAQ does not promise a specific investigation or replacement deadline, so ask the agency about your case rather than relying on an assumed waiting period.
What to expect after reporting a missing payment
Reporting the problem starts a review; it does not establish by itself that a payment is due or guarantee an immediate replacement. SSA’s public FAQ says it will replace the payment if it is due, but does not state how long review or replacement takes. Keep your explanation focused on the scheduled payment, how it was meant to arrive, and what your bank or financial institution told you, if you contacted one.
SSA has a separate internal process for patterns of lost mailed checks. Its Payment Delivery Alert System guidance addresses geographic patterns and expressly excludes a financial institution’s failure to receive an expected deposit file from that mass-loss procedure. That distinction is for SSA’s handling of broader patterns; individuals should report their own missing payment to SSA rather than trying to start the internal alert process. How to reduce the chance of a future delivery problem
SSA lists two electronic benefit-delivery options: direct deposit to a bank account and the Direct Express debit card. Which is suitable depends in part on whether you have and want to use a bank account, and on the account or card access you need. SSA’s page provides current enrollment instructions; the cited sources do not provide a full comparison of fees or features, so check the official details before choosing. SSA: Direct Deposit

In a June 2, 2026 blog post, SSA said the Treasury Department was phasing out paper checks and that SSA planned to complete the transition during 2026. Because that schedule is time-sensitive, check current SSA and Treasury instructions for what applies to you; the plan does not establish when an individual payment will arrive. The same post says paper checks are 16 times more likely to be lost, stolen, altered, or returned undeliverable than electronic payments, and reports Treasury’s average check-printing cost as $3.07 per check. Those figures provide context for the transition, not a prediction about your payment. SSA: Social Security to Fully Transition to Electronic Payments

You do not need to contact SSA to prove your identity simply to keep benefits going to your current bank. If you want to change direct-deposit details, use the identity-verification steps on SSA’s official site; its guidance describes using a my Social Security account or obtaining a one-time code before completing a change by phone. Keep account changes within SSA’s official website or phone channels. SSA says it will not text you to provide or confirm identity information, so do not respond to an unsolicited message asking for those details. SSA: What to Know about Proving Your Identity
