Southwest’s reported response to objections over pistachios in its Extra Legroom section was to offer affected passengers an alternative snack and continue evaluating customer feedback. That response was reported in October 2025; it did not address whether the airline would add other safety precautions. A later Southwest announcement named a Siete Foods snack for Extra Legroom customers beginning June 18, 2026, but did not say it replaced pistachios or resulted from the criticism.
What Southwest planned to serve—and what it said after the backlash
Southwest announced that passengers in its Extra Legroom section would receive Wonderful Pistachios No Shells in Honey Roasted and Roasted & Salted flavors. The Washington Post reported on October 30, 2025, that the airline said it had tested more than 50 snack options before choosing pistachios; that figure was the airline’s reported claim, not an independent assessment of the testing. The paper also reported that the airline’s Instagram announcement drew nearly 800 comments, most expressing confusion or concern. The Washington Post’s report describes the dispute.
In response, Southwest said affected passengers could be offered an alternative snack and that it would continue evaluating customer feedback. The airline did not comment in that report on whether it would add further safety precautions. This describes the response reported at that time, not necessarily every later operational change.
Why travelers and allergy advocates objected
The concern was that serving a tree nut in a shared cabin could expose people with allergies to crumbs or residue. Those were passenger and advocacy concerns, not proof that exposure had occurred on a Southwest flight or a measure of the likelihood of exposure.

The Washington Post reported one commenter asking why a major airline would choose “one of the leading allergens in the U.S. to serve in a confined space.” Passenger Leila Moassessi told the paper, “How am I going to travel? What am I going to do?” These remarks reflect the speakers’ concerns, not the experience of every traveler with an allergy.
Sung Poblete, CEO of Food Allergy Research and Education (FARE), told The Washington Post that tree nuts are “a common allergen that can cause a life-threatening reaction.” The FDA lists tree nuts among the nine major food allergens and says food-allergic reactions can range from mild to life-threatening. What the later Siete announcement does—and does not—establish
Southwest later announced a Siete Foods snack for Extra Legroom customers, with a start date of June 18, 2026, in a LinkedIn post. The announcement does not say the snack replaced pistachios or that the change was made because of the allergy criticism. It also does not establish which snack is served on any particular flight.
Southwest’s current onboard experience information says Extra Legroom passengers receive a complimentary premium snack on select flights traveling 301 miles or more. That general benefit description does not identify the snack offered on an individual flight.

The DOT preboarding order is a separate issue
A March 2026 U.S. Department of Transportation order says Southwest restored preboarding eligibility for passengers with nut allergies. The measure concerns access to preboard and wipe down a seating area; it does not decide whether Southwest should serve pistachios or resolve the snack-selection dispute. The order also says extending the same protections to people with non-nut food allergies would require rulemaking. Read the DOT’s Order 2026-3-9.
Preboarding to clean a seating area, announcements, and seating buffers are distinct accommodation measures, and airline policies vary. The Washington Post reported that some airlines’ measures do not extend to tree-nut allergies. No such cabin policy should be understood as a guarantee of an allergen-free environment.
