Soybean futures rallied above $13 per bushel during 2026, then fell after late-September U.S.–China talks failed to meet market hopes. The move reflects a tug-of-war: tight stocks and strong U.S. crushing supported prices, while harvest and the prospect of a large crop threatened to add supply. Separately, a new federal biofuel rule could support demand for soybean oil, but it does not guarantee higher soybean prices.
Why did soybean prices rise and then retreat?
In an October 7, 2026 report, Farm Futures said soybean futures had climbed above $13 per bushel for the first time in nearly three years. In early October, prices were still more than $2.30, or 22%, above their end-of-2025 level, according to the same report. These are dated comparisons, not current quotes. Farm Futures’ account describes support from tight stocks and record domestic crushing, alongside downside risks from the shift into harvest and a potentially record U.S. crop.
The late-September summit between the United States and China disappointed traders, and futures retreated. That reaction shows how quickly expectations can move prices: markets respond not only to crops and inventories, but also to the possibility of future demand. A headline, however, is not the same as a completed purchase or a shipment.
What do the China trade talks actually establish?
An Associated Press report dated September 24, 2026 said the White House announced a Chinese commitment to buy $17 billion annually in U.S. agricultural products in each of 2026, 2027 and 2028. The figure covers U.S. agricultural products broadly; it is not a verified soybean-specific target. The AP also reported that U.S. government data showed China had purchased $3.9 billion of other U.S. agricultural products in the first seven months of 2026, and that it was unclear whether China would reach the announced level. The AP report does not establish final soybean-specific terms from the summit.

For a market reader, distinguish the stages of demand evidence:
- Commitment: a stated intention or agreement, which may cover a broad category rather than soybeans alone.
- Announced sale: a reported transaction, not necessarily a shipment already delivered.
- Confirmed exports and shipments: evidence that product is moving, which is more concrete than an expectation but still must be interpreted in context.
Farm Futures reported post-summit disappointment, but the available reporting does not verify a tariff change or revised soybean purchase target. Do not treat either as settled fact. Farm Futures and the AP describe the broader market reaction and announced commitment, not a finalized soybean-specific outcome.

How does the Renewable Fuel Standard affect soybeans?
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency finalized renewable fuel requirements for 2026 and 2027 on March 27, 2026. Its biomass-based diesel total applicable volumes are 9.07 billion RINs for 2026 and 9.20 billion RINs for 2027. EPA states that one RIN is equivalent to one ethanol-equivalent gallon. The totals include reallocation of small-refinery exemptions: the underlying volumes are 8.86 billion RINs for 2026 and 8.95 billion for 2027, with 0.21 billion and 0.25 billion added, respectively. EPA said biodiesel and renewable-diesel production and use would need to increase by over 60% compared with 2025 to meet the final volumes. This is the agency’s projection of what compliance would require, not proof that the increase has occurred or that soybean prices have risen by a particular amount. EPA’s announcement also says the final rule reallocates 70% of small-refinery exemptions granted for 2023–2025. It states that, beginning in 2028, foreign fuels and feedstocks will receive half the RFS compliance value of American-made products; implementation and any later changes may affect how that provision operates.

The connection to soybeans runs through soybean oil: stronger biodiesel and renewable-diesel production can increase demand for vegetable-oil feedstocks, including soybean oil. That can support the oil market and the value of crushing soybeans into oil and meal. It does not translate mechanically into a specific soybean price. Crop size, inventories, harvest timing, crushing activity and trade flows all influence the balance. - Harvest and crop estimates: harvest progress and evidence about the size of the U.S. crop can change expectations for near-term supply.
- Stocks and crushing: tight inventories and strong domestic crushing were reported sources of support; changes in either can alter the balance.
- Biofuel implementation: compare the RFS volumes and EPA’s projected production response with realized biodiesel and renewable-diesel production and soybean-oil use.
These signals address different parts of the market. Trade commitments speak to possible demand, crop and inventory data to supply, and RFS requirements to regulated biofuel demand. None alone confirms the direction or size of the next price move.
