Southwest currently recommends booking an extra seat in advance if you need more than one seat. If you arrive without one, the airline says an airport agent may provide an adjacent seat at no extra charge—but only when one is available. Otherwise, you may be rebooked. Reports document criticism of the policy, but do not identify the passenger implied by the original headline or verify a specific incident.

Do you have to buy an extra seat on Southwest?

Southwest’s current customer-of-size policy says travelers who need more than one seat should purchase the additional seat in advance. Booking ahead helps secure adjacent seats; it is not a guarantee that an airport agent can provide an extra seat for free if you wait until travel day.

If you have not booked an extra seat, Southwest says an agent may provide one at no additional cost when an adjacent seat is available. If the flight is full or no adjacent seat is available, Southwest may rebook you on a flight with available seating. If the need for an additional seat is identified after boarding, you may have to deplane for rebooking.

What changed in Southwest’s policy?

January 2026: stricter advance-purchase requirements

The Associated Press reported on August 25, 2025, that Southwest planned to require travelers who could not fit within a seat’s armrests to purchase an extra seat in advance for travel beginning January 27, 2026. Under the announced rule, a traveler without an advance purchase could be required to buy another seat at the airport or be rebooked if the flight was full. Refunds for advance purchases remained conditional. AP’s report described the announced policy at that time.

May 2026: complimentary airport seats when space is available

On May 29, 2026, The Washington Post reported that Southwest loosened the airport rule after backlash. The airline told the Post that agents could provide an additional seat at no cost when adjacent seats were available. That adjustment did not promise a free seat on a full flight: the Post said a traveler without two seats available may be accommodated on a later flight with two open seats, potentially creating a lengthy delay or connection problem. Will Southwest refund an extra seat bought in advance?

Southwest’s current help page says a refund request for an advance-purchased extra seat is eligible only when all of these conditions are met:

Adjacent seating Recommended by Southwest to help ensure adjacent seats are available. Depends on an adjacent seat being available.
Upfront payment and refund You pay for the extra seat initially; a refund is conditional on an open seat (or space-available passengers) at departure, both seats being in the same fare class, and a request within 90 days. Southwest says an agent may provide an adjacent seat at no extra cost when one is available.
If seats are unavailable Booking in advance is intended to help secure the needed space. Southwest may rebook you on a flight with available seating; if the issue is identified after boarding, you may need to deplane for rebooking.

AP quoted Orlando travel agent Jason Vaughn, who creates travel content for plus-size travelers, criticizing the policy announced in 2025. He said, “I think it’s going to make the flying experience worse for everybody,” and later said, “They have no idea anymore who their customer is” and “They have no identity left.”

The Washington Post quoted Tigress Osborn, executive director of the National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance, calling Southwest’s 2026 adjustment a “tiny adjustment.” She questioned the practical value of a later flight, asking, “Well, when’s the next flight that has two seats and is nonstop?” The Post also quoted her saying that if Southwest thought it had “won all the fat people back,” “no, absolutely not.” These are Osborn’s advocacy criticisms, as reported by the Post.
