On 8 October 2025, Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe said Ruben Amorim needed three years to prove he was a great coach, adding that three years was where he would stand. It was Ratcliffe’s stated view, not a contractual guarantee. Amorim was sacked in January 2026 after about 14 months in charge.
How long did Jim Ratcliffe say Ruben Amorim had at Manchester United?
In an interview for The Times’ The Business, published on 8 October 2025, Ratcliffe said: “Ruben needs to demonstrate that he’s a great coach over three years.” Asked whether he would give Amorim three years, he replied: “Yeah. That’s where I would be. Yeah. Three years. Because football is not overnight.” The interview transcript records the interviewer pressing him on whether that meant at least the rest of the season; Ratcliffe initially answered, “He’s a good guy,” before clarifying his three-year view. That wording described Ratcliffe’s personal position in October 2025. It did not establish that the club had guaranteed Amorim a three-year contract or job security for that period.
Was Amorim actually at Manchester United for three years?
No. BBC Sport reported on 5 January 2026 that United had sacked Amorim after about 14 months in charge. The eventual outcome was therefore substantially shorter than the period Ratcliffe had said he would be prepared to give him in October 2025. BBC Sport’s account of Amorim’s departure.

What did Ratcliffe say about the press?
Ratcliffe criticized what he saw as demands for immediate success. “The press, sometimes I don’t understand. They want overnight success. They think it’s a light switch. You know, you flick a switch and it’s all going to be roses tomorrow,” he said. He also objected to decisions driven by headlines, saying: “You can’t run a club like Manchester United on knee-jerk reactions to some journalist who goes off on one every week.” The Guardian and BBC Sport both reported the remarks in their coverage of the interview.
What did he say about the Glazers?
Ratcliffe said the Glazer family “get a bad rap,” describing them as “really nice people” who were “really passionate about the club.” He said the family was “the other side of the pond,” while he and INEOS were local and present to manage United. Asked whether a Glazer request to sack Amorim would lead to his dismissal, Ratcliffe answered: “It’s not going to happen.”

What was happening at Manchester United when he made the comments?
The remarks came amid poor results and a drive to cut costs. United had finished 15th in the Premier League in 2024–25. The Guardian reported that Amorim had collected 37 points in 34 league games and that United were tenth in the table when its 8 October 2025 report appeared. The club had also been knocked out of the League Cup by Grimsby Town in August 2025.

Ratcliffe connected restructuring and financial discipline with the club’s ability to build a competitive squad. The Guardian reported £666.5 million in revenue and a £33 million loss for the financial year to June 2025, alongside about 450 jobs lost, the end of Sir Alex Ferguson’s ambassadorial role and the removal of free lunches. BBC Sport reported a £33 million loss and more than 400 redundancies. Ratcliffe argued that costs were too high and profitability mattered for squad-building; judgments about staffing and “mediocrity” should be understood as his rationale, not as independently established conclusions.
Transfer-spending descriptions also differed in the contemporaneous coverage: the Guardian put United’s summer net spend at about £170 million, while BBC Sport described summer transfer outlay in excess of £200 million. These are not necessarily the same accounting measure and should not be treated as interchangeable.

Ratcliffe’s October 2025 comments expressed a preference for patience with a manager while also acknowledging that United was results-driven. They are best read as a statement of his position at that moment—not as a promise that Amorim would remain for three years. His January 2026 departure makes that distinction clear.
