Spending Behavior of ABM Students: What the 2019 Study Found

A 2019 case study at one Pampanga high school identified desire-based and household-based expenditure as themes in ABM students’ allowance use. Its findings are local and qualitative, not representative of students nationwide.

The paper titled Spending Behavior of ABM Students describes two themes in how students used their allowances: desire-based spending, associated with pleasure or fulfillment, and household-based spending, connected to family relationships and avoiding liabilities or conflict. These are findings from a small, local qualitative case study—not a statistical picture of ABM students generally.

Which students does the paper cover?

Young Timothy A. Manansala’s paper, dated March 2019, focuses on Grade 11 and Grade 12 students in the Accountancy, Business and Management (ABM) track at Sta. Cruz High Integrated School in Lubao, Pampanga, during school year 2018–2019. The paper’s scope statement bounds its informants to students with allowances of PHP 100 or above; that is a criterion for this particular study, not a general threshold for student spending research. The source is a user-uploaded Scribd document, so its text identifies the paper’s stated context but does not independently establish an official school repository record. Read the paper on Scribd.

How was spending behavior studied?

The author describes the work as a qualitative case study. It used semi-structured interviews, purposive selection of informants, and thematic analysis. This approach can identify and interpret patterns in participants’ accounts, but it does not estimate how common those patterns are among all ABM students. The available paper excerpt does not establish a participant count or provide enough interview and coding detail to report one, so no count or theme frequency can be inferred.

What spending themes did the paper report?

Desire-based expenditure

The abstract groups one theme as desire-based expenditure and links it to pleasure. In its conclusions excerpt, students are described as spending allowances for happiness or fulfillment. This is the paper’s interpretation of its interviews, not evidence that all students spend for the same reason.

Household-based expenditure

The second theme is household-based expenditure. The paper’s displayed framework associates it with family relationships and avoiding liabilities or conflict. The conclusion excerpt says spending could be connected to students’ relationships with their parents. The findings therefore frame allowance use not only as an individual choice, but also as something shaped by household circumstances and relationships.

What can—and can’t—the findings tell readers?

The study offers a context-specific account of how a selected group of ABM students at one school described spending. It can help readers understand the categories and meanings the author drew from those interviews. Because it is a purposively sampled qualitative case study from one school and one school year, it cannot establish nationwide spending patterns, the proportion of students motivated by either theme, or a causal relationship between family circumstances and spending.

How does it relate to later ABM spending studies?

Other studies concern different students, settings, and methods, so their findings should not be folded into Manansala’s 2019 case study.
