The Bitcoin wallet in the headline was not a current account emptied in a new incident. On November 3, 2020, law enforcement seized the funds at a public address that had held about 69,370 BTC. The U.S. Department of Justice later alleged that the bitcoins had been stolen from Silk Road; its announcement described a civil forfeiture case, not a final court finding.
Which Bitcoin wallet was emptied?
The address was 1HQ3Go3ggs8pFnXuHVHRytPCq5fGG8Hbhx. It was a public Bitcoin address, not a named person’s account. A November 4, 2020 report by BleepingComputer said the address had held 69,369.16628020 BTC on November 3 before its balance fell to about $1.38. The report estimated the prior balance at roughly $957 million at the time: BleepingComputer’s November 4 account.
The figures in the later government filing are slightly different. The DOJ complaint says the address held 69,370.22491543 BTC as of November 3 and values it at approximately $1 billion on November 4, 2020. The reviewed accounts do not explain the difference, so neither figure should be treated as a reconciled exact total.
Who moved the bitcoin?
The later government account said law enforcement seized the funds on November 3, 2020. In its November 5 announcement, the DOJ said investigators traced funds allegedly stolen from Silk Road to the address and connected them to a person identified in the complaint as “Individual X.” The complaint alleges that Individual X hacked cryptocurrency from Silk Road and moved it into wallets. The government said IRS Criminal Investigation agents identified 54 previously undetected Bitcoin transactions through transaction analysis, with assistance from Chainalysis.

That is the government’s allegation and account of the seizure, not a conclusion that the complaint’s claims had already been proven. The DOJ said a civil forfeiture complaint alleges property is subject to forfeiture and that the government must prove its case by a preponderance of the evidence. The reviewed sources establish the seizure announcement and filing, but not the ultimate disposition of this specific case.
Was the wallet hacked or its password cracked?
When the emptying was first reported, security researcher Alon Gal speculated that the original owner might have moved the coins after publicity, or that someone had cracked the wallet password. Those were possibilities raised before the DOJ announcement, not established explanations.

The later announcement described a seizure by law enforcement and alleged that the funds were stolen from Silk Road. It did not establish the early password-cracking theory. The address’s balance changing alone could not identify who controlled the coins or explain how the funds had originally been obtained.
What happened to the money—and what was the Silk Road connection?
The DOJ announced that law enforcement had seized the bitcoins and filed a civil action seeking forfeiture. The government alleged that the funds came from Silk Road, the online marketplace whose founder had been prosecuted in 2015. The announcement said Silk Road had more than 100,000 buyers during its operation; that figure describes alleged marketplace activity, not the number of owners of this wallet.

U.S. Attorney David L. Anderson framed the investigation as answering an unresolved question after that prosecution: “The successful prosecution of Silk Road’s founder in 2015 left open a billion-dollar question. Where did the money go?” IRS-CI Special Agent in Charge Kelly R. Jackson said agents were able to “track down the illicit funds.” These statements describe the government’s investigative position; they do not substitute for a court determination in the civil case.
The DOJ called the seizure the largest cryptocurrency seizure in its history at the time of its November 5, 2020 announcement. That is a historical claim by the department, not a current ranking.

Why do some reports list other cryptocurrency amounts?
The complaint also lists Bitcoin Cash, Bitcoin Gold, and Bitcoin SV associated with the address before the seizure. These are separate assets created through Bitcoin forks, not additional BTC. They should not be added to the bitcoin total as though they were all the same currency.
The amounts and valuation details for those assets are not needed to understand the headline: the reported figure of about 69,370 refers to BTC, while the forked assets are listed separately in the complaint.
