No. Iowa’s 2026 Specialty Crop Block Grant application window is closed. Proposals were due to the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS) by 4 p.m. on March 27, 2026. The next Iowa application date has not been announced in the official materials available as of October 8, 2026.
When was the 2026 Iowa grant deadline?
IDALS announced the 2026 round on February 19 and set the application deadline for March 27, 2026, at 4 p.m. The IDALS program page and opening announcement give that date. USDA’s FY2026 application period is also closed, but its June 8 deadline applied to state agriculture departments seeking federal funds—not to Iowa applicants applying to IDALS.
IDALS’s reviewer-information PDF lists an earlier March 6, 2026 deadline. For applicants, the later date on the current program page and February announcement is the applicable 2026 deadline; the reviewer document appears to retain an earlier planning date.
When could Iowa applications open again?
The next Iowa application date is not established in the official materials reviewed. Check IDALS’s current program page for a future announcement and updated requirements rather than assuming the 2026 dates will repeat.

Who was eligible to apply?
For the 2026 round, IDALS listed Iowa agencies, universities, institutions, producers, industry associations, and community-based organizations as eligible applicant types. Applicants had to reside in Iowa and/or conduct business or organizational activities in the state and be in good standing. The 2026 program guidance contains the cycle-specific requirements.
USDA’s Specialty Crop Block Grant Program is administered through state departments of agriculture: individuals and other non-federal entities apply through their state, while state departments apply directly to USDA. For Iowa’s 2026 cycle, the state application route was IDALS—not USDA’s federal application portal.

What crops and projects did the program support?
Specialty crops included fresh and processed fruits and vegetables, tree nuts, dried fruits, horticulture and nursery crops, and floriculture. Livestock and poultry did not qualify as specialty crops. USDA’s specialty-crop definition describes the eligible crop categories.
The Iowa program aimed to strengthen the competitiveness of Iowa-grown specialty crops by increasing demand, yields, or awareness and benefiting the broader industry. The 2026 priority areas included:
- Expanding or improving local production, processing, distribution, and markets.
- Yield research, including organic production, pest and disease control, and new varieties.
- Grower training, resources, technical assistance, or business information.
- Education about specialty-crop nutrition, preparation, and accessibility.
A proposal focused only on one organization or individual may be a weaker fit than a project with a credible benefit for the wider Iowa specialty-crop sector. IDALS encouraged organizations, institutions, and individuals to participate as project partners.
How much funding was available?
The 2026 Iowa round offered sub-awards of up to $30,000. That was the maximum individual Iowa sub-award, not a guaranteed award amount. USDA’s FY2026 notice allocated $435,734.12 to Iowa; that figure is the state’s federal allocation, not the amount available to each applicant. The federal award period in the notice ran from September 30, 2026, to September 29, 2029. See USDA AMS’s FY2026 funding notice.

Was a matching contribution required?
USDA’s FY2026 guidance stated that no federal cost-share or match was required. Iowa applicants still needed to follow the state request for applications and budget instructions for the cycle, since state-level requirements and details may differ or change in a later round.
