Linux Foundation SkillCred exams are short, focused assessments of specific technical skills. Each exam lasts 45 minutes, requires a score of at least 70% to pass, and may combine question formats with practical input. Before starting, check the exam’s current listing and prepare your ID, computer, connection, and testing space.

What is a SkillCred?

A SkillCred is a Linux Foundation credential focused on a specific technical skill, with examples including Vim, Bash, and Git. Depending on the exam, assessment items may include multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, open-format responses, terminal input, or other formats. Passing earns a certificate of completion for that credential. See the Linux Foundation SkillCred FAQ for the credential’s scope and current exam details.

How long is the exam, and what score do I need?

The Linux Foundation FAQ states that each SkillCred exam is 45 minutes and the passing score is 70%. The FAQ does not specify an exact revision date, so consult it for current exam rules. The score report is emailed within 24 hours, barring exceptions or technical difficulties. Credentials do not expire, according to the same FAQ.

What equipment and connection do I need?

Have a webcam, microphone, one active monitor, and reliable internet. A screen of 15 inches or larger is recommended; dual monitors are not supported. The FAQ advises closing other applications and browser windows, avoiding bandwidth-heavy activity on the same connection, and ensuring that the computer or employer network permits WebRTC streaming if applicable. A wired connection is often more stable, but it is advice rather than a stated requirement. Review the official system requirements before exam day.

What should the testing environment be like?

Take the exam in a private, quiet, well-lit location with a clear, uncluttered testing area. Remain in camera view. Public locations such as coffee shops are not permitted. Proctoring includes automated identity verification and recorded monitoring; the FAQ does not describe this as human live invigilation. Detected misconduct may invalidate both the score and certification result, with written notice of violations and sanctions.

What ID is accepted, and how do I launch the exam?

You need a valid, unexpired, original physical government ID, and the name on it must match the verified exam name. The FAQ lists examples including an international passport, government-issued driver’s license or permit, national identity card, state or province identity card, alien registration card, local-language government ID with photo and signature, and certain Japanese resident or My Number cards. It also says biometric government IDs without a signature are accepted. Rules for candidates aged 16–18 include additional requirements; check the current FAQ rather than assuming the standard process applies.

SkillCred exams are available on demand and do not need to be scheduled in advance with a proctor provider. Before the Take Exam control activates, the candidate checklist requires completion of four Getting Started items:

  1. Agree to the Global Candidate Agreement.
  2. Complete identity verification.
  3. Confirm the system requirements.
  4. Confirm understanding of the testing-location requirements.

Read the exam preparation checklist and exam-taking instructions, and make sure your verified name matches your government photo ID.

What language is the exam offered in?

What does a SkillCred exam cost?

There is no single price established for every SkillCred in the FAQ. The Linux Foundation’s listing for Formatting with Markdown SC108 displayed a $79 price and 12-month exam eligibility in a listing observed in 2026. Those details apply to that specific credential listing and may change; confirm the current price and eligibility period on the page for the exam you intend to take.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
