Silver Lake Takes 51% of Altera as Intel Retains 49%

Silver Lake owns 51% of Altera after the September 2025 closing; Intel retained 49%. The announced $8.75 billion valuation differs from the closing filing’s approximately $3.3 billion equity value for Silver Lake’s stake.

Silver Lake completed its acquisition of a 51% stake in Altera on September 12, 2025, while Intel retained 49%. The transaction gives Silver Lake majority ownership, but the deal’s two headline dollar figures describe different things: Intel announced an $8.75 billion valuation for Altera, while a closing disclosure put the equity value of Silver Lake’s acquired stake at approximately $3.3 billion.

What changed when the deal closed?

Intel announced a definitive agreement on April 14, 2025, to sell 51% of Altera to Silver Lake. The transaction closed on September 12, 2025, according to Intel’s SEC-filed report. Silver Lake acquired the majority interest and Intel remained a substantial minority owner.

Measure After closing
Silver Lake ownership 51% of Altera’s equity
Intel ownership 49% of Altera’s equity
Closing date September 12, 2025

Altera announced completion on September 15, 2025, describing itself as the world’s largest independent, pure-play FPGA solutions provider. That is the company’s characterization; the cited announcements do not provide an independent market-ranking methodology.

How much did Silver Lake pay?

The figures of $8.75 billion and approximately $3.3 billion are not competing estimates of the same amount. Intel’s April 14 announcement said the transaction valued Altera at $8.75 billion. Intel’s closing disclosure later stated that Silver Lake acquired its 51% interest for approximately $3.3 billion in equity value.

Approximately $3.3 billion Equity value of the 51% interest acquired by Silver Lake, as stated in the closing disclosure Intel SEC filing

The first is the announced valuation of the company; the second is the equity value attributed to the interest Silver Lake acquired in the closing filing. Neither figure is a market-size or market-share statistic.

Is Altera independent from Intel now?

Intel described the deal as establishing Altera’s operational independence, and Altera now presents itself as an independent, pure-play FPGA provider. That operational description does not mean Intel sold all of its ownership: Intel retained 49% of the company’s equity after closing. Majority ownership by Silver Lake and continuing minority ownership by Intel are compatible with the companies’ description of Altera as operationally independent.

What does Altera make?

Altera supplies FPGA solutions and the resources used to develop them. Its September 15, 2025, completion announcement describes a full-stack offering that includes software tools, development kits, intellectual property (IP), and design services. A development kit is one practical way to work with FPGA technology, but the announcement does not identify a specific model or establish its current availability.

Altera CEO Raghib Hussain said the investment would help the company “accelerate innovation and reinforce our leadership in the FPGA market” as AI applications fuel demand for programmable logic. This is the company’s stated rationale and outlook, rather than an independently quantified forecast.
