Slalom Consulting announced a restructuring in September 2023 that CEO Brad Jackson said would result in approximately 7% of the company’s team leaving. GeekWire reported the reduction affected about 900 employees at the Seattle-based consulting firm, which had more than 13,000 employees before the cuts. Those figures are reported approximations, not an exact audited headcount.

What happened at Slalom in September 2023?

On September 7, 2023, GeekWire reported that Slalom Consulting had laid off about 900 employees. The company’s CEO, Brad Jackson, described the action as a restructuring and said it would affect approximately 7% of the team. GeekWire described Slalom’s workforce before the reduction as more than 13,000.

The 7% figure came from Jackson’s statement, while the roughly 900-person estimate and pre-cut workforce description came from GeekWire. They are approximate figures from different statements, not a precise calculation of the company’s headcount.

What reason did the CEO give?

Jackson said Slalom made the decision amid “significant shifts within our industry” and to plan for the company’s future. He wrote that company leaders had explored and debated possible options before deciding to restructure. Jackson’s September 2023 statement gives management’s stated rationale; it does not specify which industry shifts drove the decision.

GeekWire reported that Slalom declined to comment further beyond Jackson’s LinkedIn post. The available statements do not establish that a particular financial result, change in client demand, utilization level, or other specific business condition caused the layoffs.

What did Slalom say about its approach?

Jackson said the company’s guiding principles included helping affected employees, considering customers, reducing overlap and work that did not create customer value, and aligning the restructuring with Slalom’s future strategy. These describe the principles he said guided the decision; they do not provide details about affected roles, locations, severance, or the subsequent experience of employees who left.

  • Known: The restructuring was reported on September 7, 2023; Jackson said approximately 7% of the team would leave, and GeekWire estimated about 900 employees were affected.
  • Not established in the cited reporting: An exact audited number of employees affected, the specific roles or geographies involved, severance terms, or a more detailed explanation of the business conditions behind the decision.

GeekWire’s report and a contemporaneous CRN report both covered the layoffs: GeekWire and CRN.
